No. 9 Argos Open South Regional Saturday vs. Barry

Argos and Bucs meet at Morehouse in opening round

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's basketball (28-3) will play in its first-ever NCAA South Regional starting Saturday vs. Barry (20-8). Tip at Morehouse is slated for 2:30 ET/1:30 CT.

UWF men's basketball claimed the first GSC Tournament title in program history by knocking off Delta State (15-16) 71-65 in double overtime at the Pete Hanna Center Sunday. Marvin Jones earned the VisitSpaceCoast.com GSC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award, and he and Moter Deng were named to the All-Tournament team. Deng and Darryl Tucker each finished with double-doubles.

"We're playing a Barry team that's always very good," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "They'll be very, very well-coached. Butch Estes is one of the best coaches in the country, so we'll have a great, great challenge playing those guys, but I know our guys are excited about it and are looking forward to the opportunity."


SCHEDULING AND TICKET INFORMATION

* The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Regional will be hosted by Morehouse College at Forbes Arena in Atlanta.

* Second-seeded UWF (28-3) will meet seventh-seeded Barry (20-8) at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the first round of the 8-team regional. The UWF-Barry winner will meet the winner of the Clark Atlanta-Claflin game on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET. The championship is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

* Single-game general admission tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. They can be purchased at the Forbes Arena entrance on Atlanta Student Movement (formerly Fair Street). Parking is available for $5 across the street from Forbes Arena at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and at the Morehouse Parking Deck at the main entrance to campus.

Game 5 – 5 p.m. – Game 1 Winner vs. Game 2 Winner

UWF ANNOUNCES RADIO AGREEMENT FOR SOUTH REGIONAL

* The UWF department of intercollegiate athletics has announced that the upcoming NCAA Men's Basketball South Regional games for the Argonauts in Atlanta will be broadcast locally by NewsRadio 1620 AM/92.3 FM WNRP.  WNRP is a locally owned and operated station that operates at 10,000 watts of power.

Tommy Thrall will continue to serve as the play-by-play voice for the Argonauts throughout their participation NCAA Tournament. The games will also be available online at GoArgos.com.
 

SCOUTING BARRY

* Barry currently stands at 20-8 overall this season. The team finished the regular season 18-7 and earned the top seed in the Sunshine State Conference tournament. The team scored wins in the tournament vs. Florida Tech and Rollins before ultimately falling 96-71 in the championship game. Barry enters the Regional as the seventh-seed.

* Barry finished the season 12-3 at home. The Bucs are 7-4 away and 1-1 on neutral floors.

* The Bucs are led by Elvar Fridriksson, who averages 19.4 points per game. He also leads the team in assists at 7.3 per game. He was the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and is one of just four players to be named SSC Player of the Year twice. He the only player in SSC history to be a two-time Player of the Year and to earn a Newcomer of the Year honor.

* Guard Sunday Dech was named to the SSC Newcomer 1st Team. He averages 13.5 points and 6.9 assists per game. Butch Estes was named the SSC Coach of the Year. He has been at the helm for the Bucs since Apr. 2013.
 

ARGOS RISE TO NO. 9 IN NABC POLL

* For the first time in program history, UWF men's basketball (28-3) has moved into the Top 10 of the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll. The team checked in this week at No. 9.

* The Argos previously checked into the D2SIDA poll released Tuesday, Jan. 16 at No. 10. UWF checked in at No. 12 last week in the NABC poll. The Argos originally entered the NABC Top 25 Dec. 5, when they were ranked No. 25, and have remained in the Top 25 ever since. The No. 9 ranking is the highest in program history in either the NABC poll or the D2SIDA poll.
