PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF added two wins on Saturday in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader. The No. 2 UWF Women's Tennis Team (20-1, 9-0) blanked Shorter University (4-7, 1-6) at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex and snapped a 14 match winning streak accumulated by No. 27 Mississippi College (14-1, 7-1) at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.
The Argos remained perfect in singles play throughout the day, not dropping a single set in any of the 12 matches played. With these wins UWF remains the only school left in the GSC without dropping a conference match.
To start off Saturday, the team opened up play with singles. Sophomore Lais Bicca and Junior Isabella Calves powered past both of their opponents on courts five and six without dropping a game in both matches. Echevarria and Vlad followed closely behind on courts two and three, defeating and Chrun 6-2, 6-0 Jovicic 6-2, 6-2, respectively. No. 72 Heather Mixon sealed the victory for the Argos after downing Radinovic 6-1, 6-3 on court four. Gulf South Conference Player of the Week No. 50 Nicault, competing on the top court, outrallied Durzynski 6-4, 6-4 to close out the singles.
Although the match was already decided, the doubles play was still carried out. The Argos only dropped a total of two games during each of the three matches.
After finishing matches against Shorter, UWF would fac3 No. 27 Mississippi College, who owned an undefeated record entering into the GSC matchup. MC was confident in their doubles play, and they came ready to keep their winning streak alive. No. 5 Lujan and Paula Coyos raced out of the gates, gaining a quick double break over A. Kimball and Keller on the top court. Their poaching and overpowering serves were too much for the Choctaw pair, and the No. 5 Argentine duo halted a 13 match-winning streak accumulated by A. Kimball and Keller with an 8-1 score. The Choctaws promptly evened up the score after an 8-2 victory on court two. All eyes were placed on court three as Vlad and Echeverria were tied up at 6-6. The next two games consisted of back and forth deuces, and R. Kimball Gonzalez-Carrera found a way to come on top in both of these games to extend a 2-1 lead after the doubles.
The Argos were undaunted after this slight hiccup, and they entered into the singles with confidence from their previous results in singles. This assurance was displayed on courts two, three, and four after No. 50 Nicault, No. 29 Lujan, and Echevarria impressively blazed past each of their opponents without dropping a single game. For the second time that day, No. 72 Mixon clinched the deciding match for the Argos, dominating R. Kimball 6-2, 6-2. To wrap up this GSC competition, No. 7 Coyos and Vlad came through in straight sets to defeat their opponents.
UWF will rest for a few days before picking up play again on Friday, April 6th. On this day, the Argos will compete against GSC opponents West Georgia, Delta State, and Christian Brothers. Play will begin at 9, 12, and 3 CT at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
