UWF-MC WOMEN'S TENNIS BOX SCORE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The third-ranked UWF women's tennis team lost just two singles matches in 14 contests against league opponents heading into Saturday's Gulf South Conference Tournament championship.
Â
Not much changed as the Argonauts won two doubles and three singles matches to complete one of the more dominant seasons in GSC history, defeating Mississippi College, 5-1, at Lagoon Park Tennis Center for the program's eighth-consecutive title and 18th in the last 24 years.
Â
The win marked UWF's 96th-straight win over a league opponent.
Â
UWF (26-3) never trailed on Saturday, winning at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spots for a quick 2-0 lead. A small hiccup at the top spot only meant another singles win would be needed to secure the hardware.
Â
57th-ranked
Ines Nicault made it a 3-1 lead after dispatching Nicole Bueno, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. The Argo freshman went 3-0 in singles this week to move her record to 22-3 overall and a perfect 13-0 against GSC players.
Â
Moments later, 50th-ranked
Jordana Lujan closed out Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera, 6-3, 6-0 at the third position.
Â
Samantha Echevarria defeated AnneMarie Kimball in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to clinch the championship for the Argonauts.
Â
MC fell to 20-2 on the year with both losses coming to UWF.
Â
UWF will now wait to see where it will be seeded in the upcoming NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. The field will be announced by the NCAA on Tuesday, April 24 with play beginning Saturday, April 28.
