PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 2 UWF Women's Tennis Team (23-1, 11-0) clinches the top spot for the Gulf South Conference Championships after dropping only a single match in their triple-header against West Georgia (1-9, 0-8), Delta State (2-10, 1-7), and Christian Brothers (13-12, 1-8) at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
This is the seventh consecutive year that the Women's Team has been able to secure this top position for the GSC tournament, and they are also looking to capture their seventh successive GSC title.
To open up the day, the second ranked Argos pounced on the West Georgia Wolves in the doubles with Bicca and Nicault blanking England and Kane on court 1 and Vlad and Echevarria dominating Watson and Chanthaphaeng 8-1 on court 2. The lone point of the day dropped by the Argos came from court 3.
The Argos were not worried about this minor setback, and three out of the six of the women won their singles match without dropping a single game. The women concluded their first GSC match with a sweep of all of the singles matches, with Junior Calves wrapping up play with a thrilling, come from behind 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory on court six.
Only moments after Calves concluded her singles match, the Argos were back on court to take on Delta State University. The women refocused their attention to the doubles, and this time was able to come through in each of the matches. No. 6 duo Coyos and Lujan along with Heather Mixon and Isabella Calves blasted past both of their opponents on courts 1 and 3, respectively. A fiery LeFlohic and Sato, on the other hand, pushed Nicault and Bicca on court two. Their efforts, however, were halted as Bicca blazed a forehand volley into the open court on match point.
Although the women could feel the heat of the day entering into their second singles match, they showed no signs of fatigue. Heather Mixon, No. 13 Coyos, and No. 50 Lujan silenced each of their opponents on courts five, one, and two, giving the Argos a 6-0 victory over the statesmen. The remainder of the matches was suspended, but each of the Argos led against their opponents.
For the third and final match of this triple-header, the Women's Team entered the court facing Christian Brothers University. Although the Argos played two matches previously in the day, they showed no signs of fatigue as they only dropped a total of 2 games out of all three doubles matches.
The singles was not much different from the doubles, where only 9 out of 72 games were lost on all six courts.
After this long day of tennis, UWF will rest up before their showdown with previously highly ranked Hawaii Pacific University. Play is expected to begin on Friday at 10 am central time at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
