UWF Opens 2018 Season With Scoreless Draw At No. 23 Tampa

The Argonauts will travel to Flagler on Sunday afternoon

Box Score TAMPA, Fla. – The UWF men's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a scoreless tie on the road at No. 23 Tampa Friday night.

The Argonauts (0-0-1) got solid play from a deep lineup and controlled the attacking third for a good majority of the contest.

"I'm happy for us to come on the road and play as well as we did," UWF head coach Bill Elliott said. "We passed extremely well. We created a lot of chances and had a lot of corner kicks. It's definitely a positive for the team. The energy on our team was good."

UWF took 13 shots and put five on goal, with Rafael Godoi leading the way with three shots. Barrett Mills and Ed Chappe had two shots apiece and one on goal.

"Rafa was influential throughout the game and there was a period early in the second half where Chandler (Castleman) caused them some problems," Elliott said. "More than anything, us having different types of players as we make subs can change up the focus of our attacks and potentially can cause opponents different sets of problems."

In goal, Jacob Murray made five saves for the Argos.

"(Jacob) did have to make a couple of tough saves," Elliott said. "He played very well with his feet and made a lot of good passes out of the back. He held a couple of balls that were difficult to deal with and that was important for us to keep a clean sheet."

Tampa (0-0-1) had 14 shots and six were on target.

UWF ended the night with 11 corner kicks.

"Tampa is very well coached and well organized and will be tough for anybody to play against this year," Elliott added. "We are disappointed to not get the result we wanted but we played really well against a strong opponent."

UWF and Tampa have opened the season against one another for the past four years, with UWF winning one, Tampa winning two and this year's tie.

The Argonauts will travel to St. Augustine, Fla. to face Flagler (0-1) on Sunday afternoon. The game will kickoff at 2 p.m. Eastern Time at Saints Field.
