PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team will host Union (Tenn.) and Christian Brothers this weekend at the UWF Soccer Complex to open Gulf South Conference play. The Argos are looking to build on their convincing 4-0 victory Sunday vs. Saint Leo, when the offense broke out for 19 shots and four goals from four different players.
UWF (1-2-1) will battle the Bulldogs (0-2-1) at 5:00 p.m. Friday and then remain in town to take on the Bucs (0-3-0) at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The contests are the third and fourth of a five-game stretch at home for UWF, which will conclude September 21 vs. Pensacola.
UWF went 4-4-1 in 2017 in conference play, qualifying for the GSC Tournament before falling to Mississippi College.
ARGOS SPLIT WEEKEND SET VS. NO. 25 ROLLINS, SAINT LEO
* UWF men's soccer dropped their home opener to No. 25 Rollins College 3-1 Friday evening at the UWF Soccer Complex. Rafael Godoi hammered home his first goal of the season, but the Tars rallied late to spoil a UWF comeback effort. Jacob Murray was ejected on a late red card after a hard challenge outside the box. The Argos managed 11 shots while allowing 16.
* West Florida men's soccer closed the weekend with a 4-0 win vs. the Saint Leo Lions Sunday. Kameron Bethell, Sean Hoffstatter, Barrett Mills, and Andrew Wentz all netted their first goals of the season in the victory.
* UWF head coach Bill Elliott on the win: "Goals change games. We found the net a couple times early on. Otherwise I think it's a different game and a much tougher, harder game. Saint Leo has won a couple of games already this year. They're not a bad opponent at all, but we got the goals when we needed them."
ARGOS SEEK BACK-TO-BACK HOME WINS
* UWF will look to make it two in a row at the UWF Soccer Complex Friday vs. Union. In 2017, the Argos won back-to-back home games once. The team downed Delta State and Mobile by a combined score of 7-1 September 24 and 28.
* The current stretch of five straight home matches is the longest for UWF since the 2011 season, when the team hosted seven straight matches from Sep. 14 to Oct. 9.
* The Argos went 4-4-0 over eight home matches last season. In 2016, West Florida went 5-2-1 over eight matches at the UWF Soccer Complex.
GSC LEADERS
* Ed Chappe is in a tie with multiple players across the conference for the lead in assists (2). The redshirt sophomore had two last weekend vs. Saint Leo.
* Jacob Murray is in the top 4 in the GSC with 4.67 saves per game. The redshirt senior is fourth in the GSC with 14 total saves.
SCOUTING UNION
* Union is 0-2-1 overall this year. The team is 0-1-1 away and 0-1-0 on neutral fields.
* Steven Cox ascended to the position of head coach in February 2017. He is the third head coach in program history and went 4-11-1 over the course of 2017-18. He previously served as an assistant coach for North Carolina State.
* Union is currently fourth in the conference with an average of 6.33 shots on goals per game. William Valencia is currently tied for third in the conference with a pair of goals.
* The Argos are 4-2-2 vs. the Bulldogs since 2012. UWF has won four of the last five matches. West Florida is 2-1-1 at home since 2012 vs. Union.
SCOUTING CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
