CLINTON, Miss. – The tenth-ranked UWF football team compiled 456 yards of offense and the defense forced a school-record five turnovers in a 34-21 win over Mississippi College at Robinson-Hale Stadium late Saturday,
UWF (3-1, 2-0 Gulf South) improved to 2-0 in league play for the first time in its three-year history and defeated the Choctaws for the third-consecutive year. The win came after a lightning delay forced the start to be delayed by an hour and 40 minutes.
The Argonauts scored on two of their first three possessions and took a 10-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The early scores came on an
Austin Williams 20-yard field goal midway through the first quarter and an 11-yard
Sam Vaughn to
Gage Krull touchdown pass with 8:55 left in the second quarter.
MC took advantage of a rare
Chris Schwarz fumble and needed one play to cut the margin to 10-7 when Detric Hawthorne went deep to find Cole Rotenberry for a 46-yard strike 1:20 into the second half.
But that was as close as the Choctaws would get.
UWF needed just seven plays and 3:05 to march 75 yards on the next drive with Krull collecting his second score of the contest on a 4-yard toss from Vaughn. Vaughn went 6-for-7 for 60 yards on the drive.
Following a 3-and-out for MC, Vaughn led the Argos on another touchdown drive, moving 56 yards in seven plays before finding
Tate Lehtio from 23 yards for a 24-7 lead. Lehtio would catch eight balls for a career-high 133 yards. He leads the GSC with 328 yards on 32 receptions through four games.
The teams traded touchdown scores before Williams boomed a 50-yard field goal with 1:09 remaining to account for the final margin.
Vaughn threw for 380 yards on 28-of-48 with three touchdowns and an interception. He connected to nine different receivers for the second-consecutive game after hitting ten at Midwestern State
The UWF defense, meanwhile, was racking up turnovers on what seemed to be every other MC possession. The Argos forced a fumble and an interception on two of the first four possessions before collecting two fumbles and another pick on three-straight possessions at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters.
MC (2-1, 0-1) had 437 yards of total offense, led by Hawthorn's 104 yards on the ground and 174 through the air. Tiberias Lampkin had 110 yards rushing and a touchdown with 2:54 left in the contest.
UWF will return to action with another road trip to the Magnolia State next weekend. The Argos will face Delta State (0-4, 0-2) at Parker Field-McCool Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the UWF Sports Network, ESPN Pensacola 94.5 FM.
