PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's soccer (0-2-1) dropped their home opener to No. 25 Rollins College (3-0-0) 3-1 Friday evening at the UWF Soccer Complex.
Rafael Godoi hammered home his first goal of the season, but the Tars rallied late to spoil a UWF comeback effort.
Rollins got out to an early lead less than fifteen minutes into the action, with forward Stefan Avram putting one past UWF keeper
Jacob Murray off a corner to build an early 1-0 lead. UWF managed just one shot on frame in the opening period, a second chance effort by Cameron Bethell that ended up with Tars keeper Eidur Ivarsson.
"We didn't do a good job of moving the ball side to side," said UWF head coach
Bill Elliott of his team's first half performance. "We were playing ourselves onto one side of the field and just getting ourselves into problem areas that we just couldn't get out of. Their pressure was very organized."
Godoi broke through at the six-minute mark of the second half, volleying one home off a serve from
Ryan Sandidge. The goal was the first of 2018 for the junior from Osasco, Brazil.
The Tars capitalized on another corner kick in the game's 75th minute to retake the edge, with Daniel Field poking one in off the foot of Andre Nansen. A late tap-in goal inside the final minute by Damian Clarke sealed the third straight win for the Tars. Avram picked up the final assist of the match.
Rollins outshot UWF 16-11 and earned four more corners than the Argos (7-3). The Argos committed 10 fouls in the game vs. five for Rollins.
Jacob Murray drew a late red card on a hard disruption outside the box in the game's waning minutes.
"Obviously we're disappointed with the result, and we've got to get things going in the right direction, which now gets much harder with our keeper being red carded," said Elliott. "But I still think we're doing a lot of things right. We just need to be better inside the 18-yard boxes."
The Argos will look to reset vs. St. Leo (2-1-0) on Sunday at 12:30. A live stream of the game will be available at goargos.com. For the latest information on the team, follow on Twitter @GoArgos.
