CLEVELAND, Miss. – Jon Brown scored a career-high 27 points, but UWF men's basketball fell at Delta State 71-62 Thursday night. UWF will look to close its Magnolia State road trip with a win at Mississippi College Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
"Our effort was much better tonight. We played harder and better against a very good team on the road," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "Jon Brown had a terrific game. I was encouraged by our play tonight."
Brown enjoyed the most efficient night of his collegiate career so far. He netted his 27 points on just 13 shots. He finished the game 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 beyond the arc. The redshirt freshman from Helena, Ala. also netted 5-of-6 free throws.
The Argos trailed 38-33 at half. Brown scored 11 of the Argos' first 15 points. He would finish the first half with 15 points (4-7 FG, 4-5 3-PT FG) and three rebounds. Henri Ventoniemi posted eight first half points (4-4 FG). Maxwell Benoit added five points before the halftime buzzer.
UWF shot 12-of-27 (.444) from the field in the first while Delta State shot 17-of-31 (.548). The Statesmen would maintain their hot shooting in the second, knocking down 13-of-26 (.500) attempts. The Argos shot 10-of-29 (.345) in the second half.
Rashaan Benson scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. He also passed out four assists. With 13 field goal attempts in the game, he is now West Florida's all-time field goal attempts leader at 1,012. He is the only player in program history with 1,000 field goal attempts.
The Statesmen (10-4, 6-1 GSC) were led by Rasheide Bell, who scored 18 points. Justin Slocum posted the game's only double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Delta State shot 30-of-57 (.526) from the field.
UWF (4-11, 0-7 GSC) will return to action Saturday in Clinton vs. the Choctaws (4-6, 1-4 GSC). Tip is slated for 4:00 p.m.
