Five Score In Double Figures As Argos Down Hawks

Benoit leads the way with 16 in win vs. Shorter

PENSACOLA, Fla. –  Five players scored in double figures to power a 79-63 win for West Florida men's basketball over Shorter Thursday night at the UWF Field House. The win was the team's second straight. The Argos will try to run their streak to three Saturday at 4:00 p.m. vs. West Georgia.

"We had five guys in double figures, which was terrific and just had different guys play well at different times during the game," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer.

Maxwell Benoit reset his UWF career-high with 16 points. He also recorded three assists and three rebounds.

"He's got a good feel for when to drive it, when to shoot it, when to pass it," Burkhamer said of Benoit. "He's a good defender. He just helps us on both sides of the ball."

Rashaan Benson added 15 points, five boards and four assists. Brett Carter Jr. chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Alassane Kah posted a collegiate career-best 12 points and seven rebounds.

"I thought it was Alassane's best game," said Burkhamer. "I thought he did some good things rebounding the ball. He scored it pretty good for us. Probably his best game."

Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week Jon Brown scored 11 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. The double-double was his third of the season and second straight. He also posted a double-double last Saturday at Mississippi College.

Benson hit on each of his first three attempts from the field (including a pair of threes) to power an early Argo lead. UWF led 47-33 at half after a 16-5 run beginning at the 10:22 mark helped to break the period open.

"It feels great to get back-to-back wins," said Kah. "I don't think we had back-to-back conference wins yet this season, and a lot of us contributed, so it feels great to get this win."

Shorter (2-14, 0-8 GSC) was led by Joe Russell, who scored 20 points. UWF limited the Hawks to 5-of-21 (.238) from beyond the arc. The Argos finished 33-of-67 (.493) from the field. The Argos outrebounded the Hawks 44-25.

UWF (6-11, 2-7 GSC) will look to make it three wins in a row Saturday. Tip vs. the Wolves (11-5, 6-2 GSC) is slated for 4:00 p.m. in the UWF Field House.
