UWF Resumes Play at Valdosta State Thursday, Home versus Montevallo Saturday

The Argonauts are the first team receiving votes in the D2SID media poll.

The UWF women's basketball team resumes play this week opening the new year with a road contest at Valdosta State on Thursday and a home game against Montevallo on Saturday. UWF is coming off a 2-game road sweep at Alabama Huntsville and Lee before the holiday break.

SATURDAY IS BOY SCOUT DAY
* Saturday's doubleheader against Montevallo with the UWF men is Boy Scout Day. All adults or youth scouts in uniform will be admitted free to both games of the doubleheader..
* All scouts will receive a specially designed UWF Athletics scout badge.
* There will be an autograph signing after the men's game.

ABOUT UWF
* UWF resumes play with a 9-2 overall record and 3-1 mark against Gulf South Conference competition. The Argos are 2-1 in true road games after the wins over UAH and Lee, and 5-1 in all games away from Pensacola, picking up neutral-site wins over Fort Valley State, Albany State and Georgia College and a road loss to North Georgia.
* The Argonauts' four seniors - Belle BistrowToni BrewerAnna Hall & Halee Nieman - continue to lead the offense with each scoring between 9.0-20 points per game. Brewer has eight double-doubles in 11 games, while Hall has two double-doubles and is tied for the lead among all NCAA Divisions with two triple-doubles.
* Bistrow, Hall, Nieman and sophomore Danielle Norquest have all made at least 44 percent of their 3-point shots & help UWF rank eighth nationally and first in the GSC with a 40.1 percent 3-point field goal percentage and 7.4 makes per game. Bistrow is eighth individually at 49.3 pct. and 14th at 3.18 makes per game.
* UWF has out-rebounded its opponents by an average of 47-32.7 this season & ranks fourth nationally in rebound margin (12.8) and first in defensive boards (34.0).
* UWF's 3-point defense ranks fourth in the NCAA, allowing opponents to make just 22.3 percent of their shots for 4.9 per game.

ABOUT VALDOSTA STATE
* Valdosta State is 8-4 on the season and 2-2 in GSC action. The Lady Blazers are coming off a 61-43 win over Thomas on Sunday. VSU is 6-1 at home with its lone loss coming to top-ranked Union.
* VSU shoots 38 percent from the floor and is averaging 65 points per game, while allowing 56.9 ppg - a figure that ranks fourth in the GSC. The Lady Blazers are in the top two with UWF in team rebounding. They also commit just 16.0 turnovers per game.
* Senior Crystal Townsend averages 10.9 ppg to lead a trio of players at 10 points or better. She leads the team with 7,7 rebounds per game. Townsend has made 47 percent of her 3-point shots, ranking second on the team with 11 makes
* Kayla Bonilla and Sonya Franklin each average 10.3 ppg and just over four boards per contest. Nari Garner leads the team with 20 3-pointers made.
* Valdosta State leads the all-time series 29-21, but UWF has won nine of the last 12 overall and three of the last five in Valdosta, including last years GSC First Round Tournament contest.

ABOUT MONTEVALLO
* Montevallo will enter the week with a 7-4 record and 3-1 in league play. The Falcons will play at AUM on Thursday night.
* The Falcons rank in the middle of the GSC in most team categories and are fourth in rebounding offense, grabbing 42.8 rpg.
* Nautika Philpot ranks fifth in the GSC in scoring with 15.5 ppg. Her 21 3-pointers and 46 assists (4.2 apg) are also tops on the Falcons roster.
* UWF is 7-5 against UM, having won each of the last two seasons during the team's transition into the GSC.

RECAPPING THE ROAD WIN OVER UAH
* Toni Brewer scored 23 points and combined with Halee Nieman to will UWF to a 72-69 come-from-behind win over Alabama Huntsville.
* UWF fell behind by as many as 16 early in the third quarter and trailed 64-53 with 6:40 left before mounting a big push.
* The Argonauts outscored the Chargers 43-27 in the final 17 minutes, including 10-0 over the final 2:03 for their third-consecutive win in the Space City and fourth-straight over UAH.
* The big rally cry came in a timeout called by UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton just after the Chargers made their 12th 3-pointer of the game to go up 69-62..

RECAPPING THE ROAD WIN OVER LEE
* Toni Brewer took over in the second half of UWF's big regional game at Lee, scoring 19 of her game-high 25 in the second half to help the Argonauts to a 76-70 road win.
* Brewer registered her eighth double-double of the year with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting and 12 rebounds. She made her first eight shots, including a stretch where she scored 10-consecutive points for the Argos to spark a 15-6 run and put the momentum squarely with UWF as it ended the third quarter with a 49-42 lead.
* UWF never let the Lady Flames back into the game thanks to some clutch free throw shooting. The Argos made 25-of-29 and were 18-of-20 in the fourth quarter and drained all 12 over the final 1:45 to keep the Flames at a slow simmer.
* UWF collected its first win at Lee in six all-time meetings. Lee and UWF entered the game tied for third in the WBCA South Region rankings behind Union and Florida Southern.

ARGOS CLIMB TOWARDS NATIONAL RANKING
* By virtue of recent wins over Columbus State, at UAH and Lee, UWF has climbed into the first team receiving votes in the D2 SIDA Media Poll. The Argos are third in the South region media poll as well, coming in behind Union and Florida Southern. 

HALL WITH TWO DOUBLE-DOUBLES AND A TWO TRIPLE-DOUBLES
Anna Hall transferred to UWF in the offseason from Saginaw Valley State following a strong career in three seasons for the Cardinals, finishing with 658 points, 405 rebounds, 265 assists and 143 steals in 82 games. But her time with the Argonauts, she has improved up those numbers.
* Against Tuskegee, she totaled 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to record her second triple-double of the year and tie for the national lead among all three NCAA divisions. The senior was 5-of-9 from the floor and also had two steals.
* Hall is averaging 8.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. She currently ranks 34th in the GSC in scoring, and in the top five in rebounding, assists and steals.

BREWER POISED TO TAKE OVER UWF CAREER REBOUNDING MARK
* Senior Toni Brewer redshirted last season and hasn't missed a beat from the play that earned her 2016-17 All-America honors.
* Brewer currently leads the team with 12.1 rebounds per game and eight double-doubles, while ranking second with 17.5 points per game. She is third nationally in double-doubles and seventh in rebounds per game.
* She enters the weekend with 1,341 points and 999 rebounds and ranks in the top six in UWF history in both categories. She will become the program's all-time leading rebounder with seven boards and will move into the fifth place on the scoring list with six more points. Both marks would allow her to pass her former teammate Katie Bobos.

REBOUNDING CONTINUES TO BE A STRONG POINT FOR UWF
* Over the past four seasons, the Argonauts have always been a strong rebounding team. This year is no different as UWF leads Division 2 with 35.0 defensive rebounds per game and is fourth with a 12.8 rebound margin.
* The Argos have finished the year no lower than 22nd in rebound margin over the past four seasons.

UWF STRONG AT HOME UNDER YELTON
* UWF has combined to win 62 games at the UWF Field House in 6-plus seasons under Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. The Argos are 56-17 in the last 5-plus years with a .768 winning pct. They have won at least 10 games four times in the last five years, going 10-2 in 2017-18 and 12-2 in 2016-17.

GSC FEATURES 20-GAME SCHEDULE
* The 2018-19 Gulf South Conference schedule will have teams play 20 league games for the second-consecutive season. Each of the 13 teams will play the other 12 once, with eight opponents in a home-and-away series.
* UWF's single-game opponents are its first four league games - Christian Brothers and Union at home and UAH and Lee on the road. 

UWF PICKED THIRD IN GSC PRESEASON COACHES POLL
* The UWF women's basketball team received one first-place vote and was picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference preseason poll. 
* UWF is coming off an 18-12 2017-18 campaign that saw the Argonauts go 11-9 in conference play before advancing to the GSC Championship game for the second-consecutive season.
* Defending regular-season and tournament champion Union was picked first with 10 first-place votes and 142 total points. Valdosta State received two first-place votes and 124 points, just three ahead of UWF's 121.
* Lee was fourth with 115 points, while West Georgia, West Alabama and Delta State were in a close group of fifth through seventh. Alabama Huntsville and Christian Brothers tied for eighth, followed by Mississippi College, Auburn-Montgomery, Shorter and Montevallo.

BREWER, NIEMAN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* Seniors Toni Brewer and Halee Nieman were each named to the 5-person preseason All-GSC team in a vote by the league's head coaches.
* Brewer, who redshirted in 2017-18, was an Honorable Mention All-America selection as a junior in 2016-17 when she averaged 13.7 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, while registering 19 double-doubles. The Huntsville, Alabama native enters her final season with 1,149 points and 866 rebounds.
* Nieman was a Second Team All-GSC selection last year and is the second-leading returning scorer in the league with 14.7 points per game. She had five double-doubles and scored in double figures in 23 times.

YELTON IN HER SEVENTH SEASON IN PENSACOLA
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her seventh season at UWF in 2018-19 and has a 112-72 overall record. Her 112 wins rank third in program history.
* The Argonauts have five-consecutive winning seasons and have averaged 20.4 wins in those five years.
* The 102 wins from 2004-18 are the most in any 5-year stretch in program history.

YELTON NAMED TO WBCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton was voted onto the WBCA Board of Directors as one of two Division II representatives in the summer. The BOD has eight members of the Executive Committee and 21 board members from all levels of women's college basketball.
* This is her first stint with the board and adds to her resume that includes serving on the NCAA South Region Advisory Committee and as a voter on the WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.

FORMER DIVISION I HEAD COACH JOINS UWF COACHING STAFF
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton added former Presbyterian head coach Todd Steelman to her staff in the off season. The Blue Hose won 25 games overall and 19 Big South Conference contests during his time at the Clinton, S.C. school.
* Former assistant coach LaQuanda Quick was named the head coach at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
