Argo Win Streak Snapped At West Alabama

Benoit leads UWF in scoring for the third straight game

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The win streak stalled at three for UWF mens' basketball Thursday night at West Alabama as the Argos fell to the Tigers 70-56. Maxwell Benoit led the team in scoring for the third straight game with 14 points.

"West Alabama played well and really shot the ball well," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "We didn't move the ball as well as we have the last few games and that hurt us offensively. We also missed some shots that we usually make."

Henri Ventoniemi and Jarrett Henderson each scored 12 points in the loss. Henderson coupled his scoring effort with eight rebounds. He now has recorded at least 10 points and grabbed at least eight rebounds in three of the last four games.

"Ventoniemi and Henderson had good games," said Burkhamer. "We just didn't play quite well enough to beat a good team on the road."

UWF trailed 37-27 at the break. Henderson and Jon Brown each netted seven first half points. The Argos went 10-of-24 (.417) from the field while the Tigers went 15-of-29 (.517). UWA would go on to shoot 26-of-54 (.517) from the field for the game.

A 7-0 UWF run eight minutes into the second helped the team cut the hot-shooting Tigers' lead to 50-42. But UWA would prove to be too much down the stretch, keeping the Argos at arm's length by a margin of 20-14 over the last 11 minutes.

Rashaan Benson scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds, his most boards in a GSC game this season. Brown finished with nine points. Benoit added three steals, three rebounds and two steals to his 14 points.

The Tigers (13-5, 8-3 GSC) were led by LaJuan Hardy, who posted 24 points and 13 rebounds for the game's only double-double. He also passed out five assists while playing the full 40 minutes. Jake Jobling scored 18 points.

UWF (7-12, 3-8 GSC) will return home Monday to face Auburn Montgomery (6-11, 2-7 GSC) as part of Super Hero Night in the UWF Field House. Tip vs. the Warhawks is slated for 7:30 p.m.
