UWF Men's Basketball Hosts AUM Monday, West Alabama Thursday

Argos have won three of four home games over the last month

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's will host Auburn Montgomery and West Alabama this week at the UWF Field House. The Argos take on the Warhawks Monday and battle West Alabama for the second time in a week Thursday. Tip in both games is slated for 7:30 p.m.
 
The Argos are looking to continue strong play at home since returning from the winter break. Last time the Argos were at home, they defeated West Georgia 83-51, shattering season-highs in scoring and shooting percentage.
 
Monday will be Superhero Night at the Field House, and Thursday will be 90s Night. UWF will play three straight road games Feb. 4-9 before hosting the final three home games of the regular season vs. Delta State, Mississippi College, and Valdosta State Feb. 14, Feb. 16 and Feb. 21.
 
ARGOS LOOK TO MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW AT HOME
*  UWF has won three of its four home games since Christmas, including two in a row vs. Shorter and West Georgia.
* Maxwell Benoit scored a collegiate career-high 31 points, and UWF men's basketball cruised past West Georgia 83-51 Jan. 19. The win was the most impressive of the season for the Argonauts, who reset team season-highs in points (83) and shooting percentage by going 26-of-49 (.531) from the field. He has led the Argos in scoring for three straight games. 
* The margin of victory (32) vs. West Georgia was also the largest of the season for UWF, and the 51 points were the fewest the team has held an opponent to this year.
* Five players scored in double figures to power a 79-63 win for West Florida men's basketball over Shorter Jan. 17 at the UWF Field House.
* UWF has averaged 73.75 points per game at home since the winter break. UWF has held opponents to less than 60 points in three of four home games in the same span.
 
JON BROWN CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE FRESHMAN SEASON
* For the second straight week and the third time this season, Jon Brown was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week Jan. 22.
* Brown enjoyed another excellent week, helping the Argos to two wins vs. Shorter and West Georgia.
* The Helena High alum notched his second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds Thursday vs. the Hawks. He also notched two assists and two steals as UWF ran away with a 79-63 win.
* The Helena, Ala. native followed the performance vs. the Hawks with 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists in an 83-51 win vs. the Wolves.
 
BENSON CLOSES IN ON HISTORY
* Rashaan Benson is poised to break the all-time UWF career steals record. With 24 this season, he stands at 136 for his career.
* He is three swipes away from tying the all-time mark set by Deondre Boynton (139). Benson's single-game season-high is six, set Dec. 30 vs. LaGrange College.

GSC LEADERS
* Benson is 11th in the conference with 13.2 points per game. Brown is 18th with 12.4 points per game. Benoit is 22nd with 11.8 points per game.
* Benson is seventh in the GSC with a free throw percentage of .800. Brown is eighth with a .798 mark from the line. 
* Benson is tied for 9th with 1.3 steals per game. He is 12th with 3.3 assists per game. He is tied for 13th in the GSC with 1.8 three-pointers per game. 
* Jarrett Henderson has moved into sixth in the conference with 7.2 rebounds per game.
* Henri Ventoniemi is 14th with 0.6 blocks per game. 
 
SCOUTING AUBURN MONTGOMERY
* AUM enters Monday's game 2-8 in GSC play and 6-12 overall. The team is 2-6 at home, 3-5 away and 1-1 on neutral floors. The Warhawks defeated Shorter 87-69 Jan. 12 before falling to Montevallo 63-47 Jan. 19. AUM most recently fell at home 113-91 to Valdosta State. UWF will meet the Warhawks again Feb. 4 in Montgomery.
* Four Warhawks are scoring in double figures so far this season. AUM is led by Carlos Bell, who has averaged 15.5 points per game. He also averages 7.2 rebounds per game.
* AUM was picked to finish 12th in the GSC in a preseason poll of conference coaches. Bell and Mikel Davis were chosen as the team's Top Newcomers.
* UWF is 4-1 vs. Auburn Montgomery since 2005. The Argos split a pair of games vs. the Warhawks in 2017-18, falling 73-70 at home Jan. 21 before avenging the loss with a 63-46 win Feb. 8 in Montgomery.
 
SCOUTING WEST ALABAMA

* West Alabama is 14-5 and 9-3 in GSC play. The team currently sits in first place in the Gulf South. The Tigers are 9-2 at home, 5-2 away and 0-1 on neutral floors.
* UWF and West Alabama met Thursday in Livingston. The Tigers shot the ball extremely well, knocking down 16 three-pointers and shooting 51.7% from the field on the way to a 70-56 victory. Maxwell Benoit led UWF with 14 points.
* The Tiger team is led by LaJuan Hardy, who is second in the GSC with 5.4 assists per game. He is fourth with 1.8 steals per game.
* Josh Fleming who is 12th in the conference with 13.1 points per game. Hardy is 19th with 12.1 points per game.
* DeAndre Harper is tied for seventh in the GSC with 6.9 rebounds per game. Ricky Dunnaway is 11th with 6.6 rebounds per game.
* West Alabama is the top defensive team in the conference. The Tigers have held opponents to 63.8 points per game. The Argos are currently fifth at 66.1 PPG.
* UWF has won four of its last six meetings vs. UWA. The Argos are 13-13 vs. the Tigers since 2006. West Florida is 7-3 at home in that span vs. West Alabama.
