PENSACOLA, Fla. – This weekend, the West Florida volleyball team will travel to the 2019 Crossover Tournament that is hosted by the Gulf South Conference this year. The tournament is in Birmingham, Ala. at the Finley Center on Friday and Saturday October 18-19.
ABOUT UWF: The Argonauts are now 15-5 overall and still undefeated 7-0 in conference. UWF claimed road matches at AUM and Montevallo, and then hosted Belhaven on Tuesday for their annual Pack It Pink contest and won 3-0.
Senior All-American Jordyn Poppen continues to impress with her play and stats. Last weekend, Poppen recorded 38 kills and 45 digs in two matches as she now totals 277 kills on the season hitting .275. She is third in the GSC in kills and points with a total of 315 points this season averaging 4.13 per set.
Another big hitter for the Argos is freshman Veresia Yon. Yon had recorded 189 kills hitting .352 this season so far. She also is active on the net and has put up 76 blocks and has scored 248 points for the Argos.
On the defensive end, junior Ashton Marshall continues to hold down the court with 336 digs averaging 4.56 digs per set. She is followed by UWF's setters Brogan Wallin and Taylor Vaneekeren who have 145 and 135 digs. Wallin has tallied 373 assists this season averaging 5.11 assists per set and Vaneekeren has 441 assists averaging 5.99 assists per set.
ABOUT SAINT LEO: Saint Leo comes into the tournament from the Sunshine State Conference where they are 12-5 and 6-3 in the SSC. St. Leo's last match was against Florida Tech where the Lions took down the Panthers 3-1. Saint Leo hit .306 as a team Saturday including .417 in the final set. The Lions dropped the opening set 25-20 before sweeping the final three 25-16, 25-14 and 25-21.
Ashely Quero had just a single hitting error and finished with an impressive .450 hitting percentage. She also posted 11 digs, two blocks and a trio of assists. Senior Anilise Fitzi chipped in 15 kills while committing zero errors. The Walton, New Zealand native posted a .556 hitting percentage in the match. Fitzi also led the team with four blocks while posting six digs and a service ace.
UWF is 6-6 with SLU in their overall matchups. The first time the Argos played the Lions was in 2003, but their last match was last season at the 2018 Crossover tournament where the Lions beat the Argos 3-1 in Orlando, Fla. The last win for UWF was in 2016 also in Orlando, Fla. where they won 3-0. At neutral site matches UWF is 1-4 against St. Leo.
West Florida will play St. Leo first in the tournament on Friday October 18 at 4:45 PM.
ABOUT BARRY: Barry is coming into the tournament 11-5 and 6-2 in the SSC. Last Saturday, the Buccaneers won over Rollins 3-0. The Argos are 1-1 against BU facing them in 2013 and 2015. The last match came in the 2015 Crossover in Carrollton, Ga. where the Argos won 3-1 over the Bucs.
The Argos are set to play the Bucs on Saturday, October 19 at 11:45 AM.
ABOUT EMBRY RIDDLE: The Eagles come into the tournament 10-2 and 6-2 in the SSC. Their last match was against Tampa where ERAU fell 3-1 to the Spartans. Kristin vom Schemm led all players with a season-high 18 kills and she also collected a season-high 15 digs to record her fourth double-double of the year. Melanie Canfield contributed 14 kills and Jordan Schumacher added 13 kills, 10 digs, and three service aces. Olivia Roa picked up a match-best 36 digs and Alyssa Rudd distributed a match-leading 47 assists.
The Argos and Eagles have never faced each other making this a new opponent for UWF in volleyball. West Florida will face the Eagles for their last match of the tournament on Saturday October 19 at 7:00 PM.
