• The 24th-ranked UWF football team opens the second half of the 2019 season with a pair of road games, beginning Saturday afternoon at West Georgia. Kickoff at University Stadium/Ra-Lin Field is 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time/1:00 p.m. Central Time.
• The game will be the second of three-consecutive Homecoming games for the Argos. UWF won on its Homecoming two weeks ago and will be the guests of honor this week at UWG and next week at Florida Tech.
ABOUT UWF
• UWF enters the game at 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The Argonauts are coming off a 48-3 home win over Delta State two weeks ago on Homecoming. They were off last week.
• The Argo offense is averaging 444 yards per game which ranks second in the GSC and 28th nationally. The 283.8 passing yards per game lead the league and are 20th in the country.
• Not to be outdone, the UWF defense has gotten better each game in 2019 and ranks second in the GSC and 13th in the NCAA, allowing 261 yards per game. The points allowed of 11.6 is first in the league and fifth nationally.
• On special teams, UWF is second nationally in net punting - after ranking 12th in the country in 2018 - and 20th in kick return defense, allowing just 16.4 yards per return.
ABOUT WEST GEORGIA
• West Georgia come into the game at 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in GSC play. The Wolves are averaging 28.5 points per game while allowing 24.7.
• The offense has averaged 433 yards per game and is led by senior QB Willie Candler. The reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week was 25-of-41 for 327 yards and four TD at NGU (he also ran for another score). He has thrown for 1,417 yards and completed 62.3 pct. of his passes with seven TD in 2019. He is the school's career leader in completions, yards passing and passing touchdowns.
• Freshman Chauncey Williams leads the ground game, averaging 88.3 yards per game with a GSC-best nine rushing TD.
• After allowing just nine points to Catawba in the season opener, the UWG defense had given up more than 500 yards of offense to both Florida Tech and Shorter. The UWG defense came alive last week against North Greenville, allowing just 217 yards, while collecting five sacks, doubling the team total for the year.
SERIES HISTORY
• UWF and West Georgia are tied in the all-time series at 2 wins apiece. In fact, the road team has won all four games.
• In 2016, the Wolves won 69-0 in the final game of UWF's inaugural season.
• The teams met twice in 2017 in Carrollton, once in the regular-season finale and again two weeks later in the NCAA Playoffs Second Round. UWF won both games. In the first meeting, UWG got out to a 16-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes. The Argonauts scored 24 unsanswered to take a 24-16 lead before holding on for a 34-29 win that helped vault them into the postseason for the first time in program history.
• The teams met again two weeks later and UWF came away with a 17-14 victory. The Argos scored with 13 seconds left in the first half for the only score of the first 30 minutes. UWG scored twice in the third to take a 14-7 lead. The Argos tied it early in the fourth before Austin Williams kicked a 41-yard field goal with 4:50 remaining to provide the difference.
• Last year, both teams came in ranked in the top-10 nationally and saw UWG emerge with a 27-7 win in front of a Blue Wahoos Stadium record crowd of 6,838. The Wolves' Devontae Jackson rushed for 224 yards and two second-half touchdowns.
GEORGIA ON MY MIND
• The Argos have won their last four games in the state of Georgia. They are 4-1 all-time in the Peach State, with their lone loss coming at Valdosta State in 2016. Since then, they have defeated West Georgia twice in 2017 and Shorter twice - once in 2017 and this season in week two.
WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
• UWF enters the sixth week of the season with just one loss and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference for the second-consecutive season. The Argos are trying to finish the second half as strong as they ended the first half and make a run at a playoff berth. A year ago, the Argos went 1-4 to close the season at 6-5 and missed the playoffs after their 5-1 start.
• UWF is 4-1 through five games for the third-consecutive season. A win against West Georgia would match last season's 5-1 mark as the best 6-game start in program history.
• UWF is 8-6 all-time in October following the win over Delta State two weeks ago.
DEFENSE GETTING STRONGER EACH WEEK
• The UWF defense has continued to improve each week this season. The Argonauts rank first or second in the GSC in scoring defense, total defense, passing defense, first downs allowed, third down defense and fourth down defense.
• UWF ranks fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 11.6 points per game and has given up seven TD (5 rushing/1 passing/1 INT) this season.
• The defense has been especially stout the past 3 and a half games, allowing just three TD in the last 14 quarters.
ARGOS HAVE FORCED TURNOVERS IN 38 OF 42 GAMES
• The UWF defense forced a school-record five turnovers last season at Mississippi College and four more at Delta State and against Valdosta State.
• UWF finished with 15 fumble recoveries to rank first nationally and 10 interceptions - including a pick 6 by David Richardson against FIT and another by Jamel Jackson at North Greenville. The Argos did not get a turnover in the finale at West Alabama, ending their streak of games with at least one turnover at 12 games.
• Further inspection shows the Argonauts have gotten at least one turnover in 38 of their 42 all-time games. UWF is 26-10 when getting a turnover and 1-5 when unable to force a sudden change. The current streak is five games.
• The turnover prize for UWF is a navy blue Turnover Shield and was created by Defensive Coordinator Darian Dulin prior to the 2018 campaign. The 3-inch round wooden disk has a large UWF logo on a navy blue background. The shield, which is a replica of what Jason and Argonauts may have used, is then signed in silver marker by the player(s) who had a hand in creating the turnover.
OFFENSE AVERAGING BIG PLAYS IN BUNCHES
• The UWF offense has consistently been producing plays of 20-yards or more this season. They have made 25 big plays through five games with at least eight in three of them.
• They have had 22 pass plays for at least 20 yards and 11 for 30 or more. Senior WR Quentin Randolph has been the top big play recipient with seven (of his 13 total) catches for at least 20 yards. He is averaging 23.9 yards per catch and 62.5 per game this season.
• Kevin Grant has three big plays out of his seven on the year. He is fourth on the team with 19 yards per reception.
REED EMERGING AS A TOP QUARTERBACK IN THE GSC
• Redshirt freshman QB Austin Reed was locked in a tight battle for the starting spot through fall camp and the first game week of the season. With his ability to move the offense in key series' at Carson-Newman and continued success at Shorter a week later, he has taken over the starting position and thrived.
• The St. Augustine, Fla. native leads the Gulf South Conference in passing yards per game (258.0), passing TDs (14) and passing efficiency ratio (166.1).
• He is the first quarterback in program history to win their first three starts and is currently 4-0 as a starter. Kaleb Nobles and Mike Beaudry each won their first two games as starters in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Beaudry holds the UWF records for wins as a starter with 10. Nobles is second with six and Sam Vaughn is third with five.
RUNNING BACK BY COMMITTEE
• The UWF rushing offense ranks sixth in the GSC at 160.6 yards per game. After rushing for just 68 yards in the opener, the team has gone for 140, 222, 196 and 177 yards in wins over Shorter, Virginia-Lynchburg, Mississippi College and Delta State.
• Much of the credit has been given to junior Anthony Johnson, Jr. who ranks 10th in the GSC with 49.8 ypg. And even that number is misleading as the Pensacola native had just four carries for 22 yards at Carson-Newman while recovering from a injury in fall camp. Against Shorter he had 72 yards on 14 carries before 85 yards on 11 rushes for a 7.7 avg. against Virginia Lynchburg.
• Sophomore Jervon Newton had his best game of his 2-year UWF career three weeks ago against MC, rushing for 100 yards on 19 carries with a TD. The 100-yard game was the sixth in program history. He rushed 10 times for 52 yards on the Argos' go-ahead scoring drive of 11-plays and 63 yards against the Choctaws.
• Freshman Shomari Mason broke off a team-best 26-yard run three weeks ago against VUL and has 83 yards on 15 carries for a 5.5 per carry avg. He became the latest 100-yard rusher with his performance against Delta State two weeks ago, carrying the ball six times for 100 yards and two TD. Sophomore Jaden Gardener also has breakaway speed and is putting up 3.5 yards per rush.
LEHTIO SETS UWF CAREER RECEPTIONS MARK
• Senior WR Tate Lehtio pulled down his 137th career reception in the home win over Mississippi College, moving past Antoine Griffin for the most receptions in school history. Lehtio (Lee-tee-oh) now has 147 receptions and 1,631 yards. He needs 67 to pass Griffin on the career receiving yards list. Griffin holds that mark with 1,697 from 2016-18.
WILLIAMS RESUMES PURSUIT OF GSC FIELD GOAL RECORD
• Senior PK Austin Williams made a 37-yard field goal last month, pushing his career total to 40 and moving into sixth place on the Gulf South Conference career field goals made list. Those 40 place him third among active Division 2 kickers in the country, behind Matt Graveley of North Greenville at 43 and Jake Chapia of Slippery Rock at 41.
• Additionally, he now has 208 career points, extending his total as the program's all-time leading scorer. He has 40 career field goals and 88 career extra points.
UWF RETURNS TO NATIONAL RANKINGS
• Following the win over Delta State, UWF returned to the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 rankings at No. 25 in each poll.
• It marked UWF's first appearance in the rankings this season after being listed among the 'others receiving votes' in the preseason edition and each of the last three weeks.
• The last time the Argos were ranked was in week seven of 2018 when they were 5-2. The program has now been ranked a total of 11 times in its history.
• The Argos enter the West Georgia game at No. 24 after moving up one spot in each poll during the bye week.
14-POINT COMEBACK IS THIRD BEST IN A WIN IN UWF HISTORY
• UWF found itself trailing Mississippi College 14-0 following the Choctaw's pick-6 midway through the second quarter. But never fear, they came back with 21 unanswered for a 21-14 lead before MC tied it on the last play of regulation. Our story does have a happy ending, though, as UWF won 27-21 in overtime. The 14-point deficit overcome for a win was the third-largest in program history.
• Last season, UWF found itself trailing Delta State 21-6 at halftime before scoring 24 unanswered for a 30-21 victory. That 15-point deficit proved to be the second-largest overcome for a victory in UWF's brief 3-year history. In the 2017 regular-season finale at West Georgia, the Argos trailed 16-0 after the first quarter before claiming a 34-29 win that vaulted the Blue & Green into the NCAA Playoffs.
• The largest deficit overcome by a UWF team was at Valdosta State in the fourth game in program history when the Argos spotted the Blazers a 20-0 lead 8:46 into the game. UWF took a 28-27 lead late in the third quarter before falling 40-28.
WHOA! ARGOS LOVING THE RED (ZONE)
• If Joey Russo's character from the hit sitcom 'Blossom' was watching the Argos this season, he might blurt out his catch phrase of 'WHOA!' numerous times during a game. That's because UWF has converted 17 of 21 times inside the red zone through five games.
• On the flip side of that, UWF has held the opposition to a 62.5 percent conversion rate (5-of-8) inside the 20-yard line. That leads the GSC and ranks 13th in the country. Opponents have scored just two TDs and three FGs in the red zone on eight trips.
UWF STRONG IN BLUE WAHOOS STADIUM NIGHT GAMES
• UWF has enoyed a winning record in two of the three seasons at Blue Wahoos Stadium in the fourth year of the program, amassing a 11-7 record. The Argonauts have been especially successful in night games (5 pm kickoff or later), going 9-2 following the win over Delta State on Oct. 5.
115 PLAYERS IN FALL CAMP, 5 WITH BACHELOR'S DEGREE
• UWF currently has 115 student-athletes on its roster entering the opening week of play. Since the program started filling out the roster in the Spring of 2015, the maturation levels have continued to rise throughout the program.
• Additionally, UWF has 5 players who have earned their undergraduate degree and are working towards a second. That places them fifth in Division II in 2019. They led the nation with 11 graduates playing a year ago.
UWF PICKED 4th IN GSC PRESEASON POLL, THREE ARGOS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
• A year removed from a 6-5 season that saw the team miss the NCAA Playoffs, the UWF football team was picked fourth in the 2019 GSC Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league office.
• Additionally, three Argonauts – Samuel Antoine on offense, Trent Archie and Andre Duncombe, Jr. on defense – were named to the preseason all-GSC team by the league's nine head coaches.
• Antoine has been named All-GSC each of the last two years and returns for his senior season at tackle. The third-year player from Weston, Fla. has helped anchor an offensive line that averaged 351.4 yards of total offense over the past two seasons.Â
• Archie, who sat out the 2018 season, has averaged 93 tackles in his two previous stints on the field as a safety and nickelback. The Mobile Ala. product was the 2016 GSC Defensive Freshman of the Year and a Second Team All-Region selection.Â
• Duncombe is a preseason honoree for the second-consecutive year and has 169 career tackles as an Argo. The linebacker from Miami, Fla. has a school-record 33.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 quarterback sacks.
