HOOVER, Ala. – The Argonauts finished their time in Hoover, Alabama with some good competition and two tough losses. UWF started the day off with Barry at 11:45 am and lost the match in three making that their second loss of the tournament. The Argos then had a six hour break before playing their final match against Embry-Riddle at 7:30. ERAU pulled out the win over UWF 3-2 giving the Argos their third loss on the weekend.
Against BARRY (L, 0-3): UWF struggled in their first match of the day against Barry. The Bucs managed to keep the Argos out of system which didn't allow their offense to come together smoothly.
Barry took the win in three in decisions of 25-20, 25-13, 25-18, respectively. With this loss, UWF moved to 15-7 overall and Barry improved to 13-5 overall.
The Argos defense had shining stats from Junior Ashton Marshall as she lead with 15 digs followed by Senior Jordyn Poppen who tallied 13 digs. Blocking was led by Freshman Veresia Yon who had four blocks followed by Jodee Kovanda who notched three blocked and Natasha Bannister who earned 2 blocks. UWF totaled 55 digs and 7 blocks on the match.
AGAINST EMBRY-RIDDLE (L, 2-3): This match was a whirlwind of a volleyball match for both teams. UWF came out and took sets one and two 25-21, 25-15 over the Eagles, but then fell in the next three sets in 25-17, 28-26, 15-10 decisions. This was the last match to finish in the tournament and the competition did not disappoint.
West Florida had several players who had a great game despite the outcome of the match. Taylor Vaneekeren, Brogan Wallin, and Jordyn Poppen each recorded double-doubles as Poppen had 22 digs and 11 kills, Wallin tallied 29 assists and 20 digs and Vaneekeren earned 19 assists and 17 digs.
Big hitter for the Argos tonight was Sophomore Sadie Hough as she led the team with 18 kills on 35 attacks and three errors hitting a .429 on the match. Hough had the most individual kills in the match on both sides of the court and led the Argos offense tonight. This is Hough's match high in kills for her collegiate volleyball career.
As a team, UWF recorded 103 digs in the match along with nine blocks, 16 block assists and one solo block by Ashlan Riley. UWF's defense has proven to remain strong through adversity. The Argos are now 15-8 overall and still 7-0 in the GSC and ERAU improves to 13-2 overall and still 6-2 in the SSC.
Up next for West Florida will be another away journey to Georgia where the Argos will play Lee on Friday October 25, at 5:00 PM and then travel to Rome, Ga. on Saturday October 26 where they will take on the Shorter Hawks at 12:00 PM.
