Argonauts Wrap Up October’s Matches With the Flames and Hawks

UWF travels to Cleveland Tenn. and Rome, Ga. this weekend

PENSACOLA, Fla. –  This weekend, the West Florida volleyball team will travel to Cleveland and Rome to face off against the Lee Flames and the Shorter Hawks. On Friday, October 25, UWF will play in the Paul Dana Walker Arena at 5:00 PM against Lee. The next day the Argos will travel to Rome, Ga. to play Shorter at 12:00 PM.

The matches will be live streamed accompanied by live stats provided by the host schools for those wanting to watch and that information can be found at goargos.com.

ABOUT UWF: The Argonauts are now 15-8 overall and still undefeated, 7-0 in conference. This week we continue conference play on the road for their final weekend before coming back home to start off November off in the UWF Field House. 

Senior Jordyn Poppen is continuing to impress this season recording 299 kills 278 digs and 32 blocks. Another big hitter for the Argos is Freshman Veresia Yon. Yon had recorded 211 kills hitting .349 this season so far. She also is active on the net and has put up 89 blocks, 12 solo and 77 assisted and has scored 279.5 points for the Argos. 

On the defensive end, Junior Ashton Marshall continues to hold down the court with 381 digs averaging 4.43 digs per set. 

ABOUT LEE: Lee comes into Friday's match 9-14 overall and 2-6 in the GSC. In the 2019 Crossover, Lee went 0-3 against Spring Hill, Florida Tech and Florida Southern. On Tuesday this week, the Flames lost against Montevallo in three sets. 

UWF and Lee have played each other 12 times in their history and the Argos are on top 10-2 overall and 3-2 on the road. The last time the Argos and Flames matched up, UWF came out on top in four sets in October of last year. The last time UWF lost to Lee was in 2016 in five sets on the road.

The match against the Flames will start at 5:00 PM CT in Cleveland, Tenn. at the Paul Dana Walker Arena.

ABOUT SHORTER: The Hawks will come into the match currently 7-15 overall and 0-7 in the GSC, but Shorter will have a match on Friday against Auburn Montgomery before they face the Argos on Saturday, October 26 at 12:00 PM CT.

At the GSC Crossover, the Hawks went 0-3 with losses to Florida Southern, Rollins College and Spring Hill. 

UWF and Shorter have faced off 15 times overall and the Argos are on top 13-2 overall and the only two losses to the Hawks were both on the road in Rome, Ga. The last time West Florida lost to Shorter was in 2016 in a five set loss. The last time the two teams played each other, the Argos won in three on October 16, 2018 in Pensacola.

The match against the Hawks will start at 12:00 PM CT in Rome, Ga. at the Winthrop-King Centre.
