UWF Takes Down No. 12 Alabama Huntsville, 65-60

The Argos are set to play one more home game before the new year


PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF men's basketball team outscored No. 12 Alabama Huntsville 12-5 over the final six minutes to come away with a 66-60 win at the UWF Field House Tuesday night.

UWF (4-6, 2-2 Gulf South) shot 52 percent in the second half and held the Chargers to just 24 points after halftime.

Jon Brown led UWF with 20 points, including 12 in the second half and five-consecutive on two baskets and a free throw with just under 2:00 to play that put the Argonauts ahead for good. He also had five rebounds. Daniel Sofield was locked in from outside, making six 3-pointers to finish with 18 points. Tarik McKelphin also played strong, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half.

"Our guys were aggressive, they were active and they took good shots," UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer said. "Tarik was able to get to the basket and I thought Jon had energy tonight and looked really good shooting the ball, so both those guys just had to terrific games."

After UWF opened whe game with a Sofield 3-pointer, UAH scored the next eight points for the early lead. The Argos pulled to within three a number of times but the Chargers went on a 10-5 run in the last 2:20 to take a 36-25 lead into the locker room.

The turning point came when UWF went on a 13-2 run in the middle of the second half that turned a 10-point deficit into a one-point advantage at the 8:32 mark of the second half.

"At halftime, I told them they just have to play better and in the second half we fought hard for the entire 20 minutes. Overall, it was a really good win against a very, very good team."

UAH (8-2, 2-2) shot 36 percent for the evening and lost the rebounding battle, 41-35. Malik Cook-Stroupe led three Chargers in double figures with 15 points.

The Argonauts will be back at home for their final game of the 2019 calendar year on Thursday, Dec. 19 when they play host to Mobile. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the UWF Field House.
