SAINT LEO, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team struggled to score late in the game and fell to Roberts Wesleyan, 57-46, in the opening game of the Saint Leo Hampton Inn Classic at the Marion Bowman Center on Friday.
UWF (3-8) shot 23 percent in the contest and was led by junior
Danielle Norquest who finished with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Sophomore
Rachel McCree added 13 off the bench with three 3-pointers.
The Argonauts controlled the glass for the fifth time in 11 games, outrebounding the Redhawks, 53-39. RWC did score 16 points off 18 Argo turnovers.
UWF came out and built the momentum with a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. RWC tied the game at 22 in the second before the Argonauts got a layup from
Ashaunti Brown and a three from McCree in the last 30 seconds to go into the locker room with a 27-22 lead.
The game was tied entering the fourth quarter when the Redhawks used runs of 6-0 and 9-0 to extend their lead to 53-39 with 3:13 remaining.
"It all came down to RWC finding their outside rhythm in the fourth quarter and we couldn't answer," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "Danielle (Norquest) had another strong performance and today, it was
Rachel McCree who gave us another scorer on the floor. We are searching for a third player to give us double figure scoring on a consistent basis"
RWC (6-5) connected on 32 percent of its shots and was 9-of-34 from outside.Taryn Wilson made four triples and led the team with 16 points.
UWF return to play on Saturday against Southern Wesleyan (1-9). Tipoff is at Noon Eastern Time.
