PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF Men and Women's Tennis teams kick-off their 2019 spring season at home this year at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex tomorrow against Florida Southern at 10:00 am and Alabama Huntsville at 2:00 pm.
For the women's squad, they are filled with upperclassmen experience and come into the spring season nationally ranked No. 2 in the National Oracle/ITA Division II Women's Rankings just behind Barry University. The Argo's head into the spring season with only two underclassman and no freshman on the team, but they did add on with three transfers; junior, Gabriela Araujo from Virginia Commonwealth University, graduate student, Jennifer Rink from Valdosta State, and sophomore, Karolina Silwanowicz from University of Louisiana-Monroe.
West Florida sophomore, Berta Bonardi is coming off of an amazing fall season where she won six matches to claim the singles title in late September. Then in October, Bonardi won three matches at the ITA Cup to claim the Division 2 National Championship at the Rome Tennis Center which she then qualified to play in the concluding tennis event of the fall season, the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships where she lost in the second round. Bonardi enters the spring season nationally ranked No. 1 in singles, but she is also joined in the top 50 by Silwanowicz who is ranked No. 29.
The Argos did lose some significant players from the 2018 season, but have plenty more who have stepped up to the challenge including senior Heather Mixon. Mixon had a significant Junior season for herself and her team. In singles play she had a record of 30-2 overall, and went 12-0 in conference play and is ready to get her senior year rolling.
The women are set to face another ranked team, No. 17 Florida Southern first at 10:00 am. FSC has also already started their season only just earlier today against Auburn Montgomery where they won 4-0 and clinched the match leaving three unfinished games. Following FSC, the Argos will face UAH at 2:00 pm who has already been playing this season since February 9th and will come into the match tomorrow 2-1.
The Argonaut men's team enters the spring season ranked No. 4 in the National Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Rankings. With seven returners the Argos are looking to come into the season with good experience and knowledge. Two returners are ranked in the top 50 for singles, that include the Swedish junior, Sedar Bojadjiev who is No. 8 and the Argentinian junior, Juan Motta who is No. 34.
The Argonauts have a scrappy team this year and with losing few key players they have had to make adjustments. Bojadjiev has stepped up to be a leader for the team and in the fall won the GSC Singles Championship and also was recognized earlier this week at the Pensacola Sports Banquet with amateur athletes for being a 2018 ITA All-American last year. The team has also added on five newcomers this season including two sophomore transfers, Gerardo Irarrazabal from Hawaii Pacific and William Shkrob from Stetson.
The Argos are set to face FSC who also has already started their spring season a few weeks ago and will come into tomorrows match 0-2. Later in the day, UWF will play against Alabama Huntsville. UAH first who has already started their season this last weekend when they opened up against Martin Methodist College at home and won 5-2. They will go into the match against the Argos 2-0.
