PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball outhit No. 18 Nova Southeastern 12-5 but was shutout in a 1-0 loss Tuesday at Jim Spooner Field. The Argonauts resume conference play this weekend at Auburn Montgomery.
"It's a tough loss," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "It's a great baseball game. It's what you look for. Our pitching absolutely did a great job again… We just didn't come through when we needed to."
UWF got outstanding pitching all day from
Jay Simpson (0-1) and
Dylan Mills-Derouen. The two hurlers from Mississippi combined for nine innings of five-hit, 10-strikeout ball. Simpson suffered the loss after allowing the game's only run in the third on a two-out RBI single by Christian Demby.
The Argos stranded a season-high 15 runners in the game, including the bases loaded in the fifth and the eighth.
Matt Sullivan,
Matthew Jones,
Robert Lopez and
Isaac Phillips all finished with two hits. Lopez and Phillips started the sixth and seventh respectively with doubles. Lopez was stranded though, and Phillips was forced out at the plate after a failed squeeze.
UWF stranded 12 base runners over the final four innings, including two aboard to end the game. The team also missed out on an early opportunity when
Trevor Payne was caught trying to score from first on a double by
Mike Farnell in the second.
Mills-Derouen struck out a season-high six. The start was the first of Simpson's NCAA career after a successful career in the rotation Jones County Junior College. Kyle Kilbourne (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Sharks starter Devin Meyer. Kilbourne scattered four hits over 2.2 innings. Brock Minich earned his second save. The No. 18 Sharks improved to 6-4 with the win.
UWF (6-5, 3-0 GSC) will head to Auburn Montgomery this weekend. First pitch in the three-game set at AUM is slated for 6:00 p.m. Friday.
"Anytime you play anybody in conference, you've got to bring your A-game," said Jeffcoat. "I keep saying that over and over to our guys. If you can be consistent and bring a certain level we expect everyday, we can manage that a lot better. It's the highs and lows we've got to stay out of."
