PENSACOLA, Fla.– The 19th-ranked UWF women's basketball team turned in its best defensive performance of the season on Thursday, defeating Valdosta State, 69-39, on Senior Night at the UWF Field House.
UWF (22-4, 16-3 Gulf South) held the Lady Blazers to season lows for points and field goal shooting at 21.2 percent. VSU managed to score just eight points in the first quarter and seven in the second for a season-low 15 at the half.
The Argonauts entered the game fourth in the country in 3-point field goal defense, limiting opponents to 26 percent shooting. On Thursday, the Lady Blazers were just 1-of-22 and missed their final 21 attempts.
UWF wasn't just defending on the perimeter. The squad also blocked a season-high four shots for the second time in a week.
UWF, meanwhile, shot right at its season average with a 46 percent effort. The Argonauts were 14-of-15 at the free throw line and outrebounded VSU 47-37.
Toni Brewer led the team with offensively with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Halee Nieman battled foul trouble to finished with 17 on 7-of-11 from the floor.
Anna Hall had 15 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Leading 12-6 late in the first quarter, UWF went on a 9-0 run to stretch its lead to 21-6. After holding a 29-15 edge at the half, the margin grew to just over 20 points late in the third. UWF was able to get a number of layups off gaps in the VSU press in the first two quarters.
VSU (17-9, 11-7) got 12 points from Sonya Franklin while leading scorer Kayla Bonilla was held to a pair of free throws and an 0-for-8 shooting night.
UWF will now conclude the regular-season on Saturday afternoon with a road contest at Montevallo (12-14, 8-10). Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Trustmark Arena. The Argos will then be off for nine days before hosting a GSC Tournament First Round game on Tuesday, March 5.
