MONTGOMERY, Ala.– The UWF women's basketball team outscored Auburn-Montgomery 24-5 in the second quarter on its way to a 63-45 win at the AUM Gymnasium Monday night.
The win for UWF (17-4, 11-3 Gulf South) was its seventh-consecutive, with six of those by at least 17 points. The 7-game streak is tied for the second-longest in program history.
AUM made a 3-pointer to get within two at 17-15 in the opening moments of the second quarter before UWF reeled off 19-straight points for a 36-15 lead. Five of the baskets came in the paint with the other three coming from long distance.
While the offense was having its way on one end of the floor, the defense was doing its part, collecting three steals while holding the Warhawks to 0-for-6 shooting and five turnovers during the run.
"We are continuing to get better defensively as the season goes along," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "When you run the pack line defense, as the players continue to work those concepts, they get better and better as executing the principles. (Tonight) we played their personnel well and helped when we needed to."
UWF also did a solid job on the glass, outrebounding AUM 44-35 while limiting the Warhawks to just six offensive boards.
Halee Nieman led all players with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
Toni Brewer matched her frontcourt mate with a double-double – her 15th of the year – of 18 points, 11 boards and three steals.
AUM (2-19, 1-12) shot 32 percent and was 4-of-20 from outside. Jessika Milton had a season-high 12 points for the Wahawks. Leading scorer Jordan Brewster came into the game averaging just over 15 points per game and was held to a pair of free throws and 0-for-9 from the floor.
UWF will continue its 3-game road swing later this week with a contest at Shorter (1-19, 0-13) on Thursday night. Tip-off at the Winthrop-King Centre in Rome, Ga. is set for 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
