SAN ANTONIO, TX– The UWF women's tennis team lost 4-3 to Southwest Baptist in a match that came down to the No. 3 singles match.
In doubles, the Argos were off to a good start with the No. 3 doubles team, Valeria Mantilla and Heather Mixon defeating Sarah Brown and Emma Davis 6-0. Karolina Silwanowicz and Gabriela Araujo were next to finish losing 7-5.
The final doubles match came down to Berta Bonardi and Diana Vlad as they lost to SBU's Jill Van den Dungen and Klara Vickov 7-5.
Going into singles down 1-0, the Argos had to comeback and win early which they did. West Florida won three singles matches in a row putting them ahead 3-1 over SBU. Mixon was first to win 6-0, 6-0 followed by No. 29 Silwanowicz winning 6-2, 6-2. The last win for the Argos came from No. 1 Bonardi who had a huge win over No. 11 Jill Van den Dungen 6-3, 6-2.
The last three matches were very close and long matches. Vlad lost at four 6-3, 6-4 and she was followed by Valeria Mantilla losing to Sarah Brown 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
As the match is tied at 3-3, it came down to Gabriela Araujo as she battle against Constanca Crespo but ultimately lost in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
West Florida is ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 2 regionally and is now 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Tomorrow the Argos will face off against No. 4 Hawaii Pacific University with a start time of 9:30 CT.
