Argonauts Cruise Past Eckerd, 76-50, In NCAA First Round

UWF shot over 50 percent for the fifth time this season

LAKELAND, Fla.– Seniors Toni Brewer and Halee Nieman combined for 44 points as third-seeded UWF cruised to a 76-50 win over sixth-seeded Eckerd in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball South Region Quarterfinal at Jenkins Field House Friday.
 
UWF (24-5) made 51 percent from the floor and used runs of 9-0 and 7-0 in the first quarter and 8-0 late in the second to put the margin in double-digits for the final 33:37 of the game. The Argonauts led by as many as 22 in the first half before taking a 43-26 lead into the locker room.
 
UWF shot 54 percent in the opening 20 minutes while holding Eckerd to 29 percent in the same stretch. They also controlled the glass with a 24-12 advantage. The Argos ended the game with 10 offensive boards that they converted into 12 second-chance points.
 
Eckerd wasn't able to implement its full court press with regularity. UWF did have two turnovers as a direct result but also had five fast break baskets and finished with 13 fast break points.
 
Brewer shot 10-of-15 and led all players with nine rebounds, while Nieman was 7-of-10 from the floor. Freshman Fanny Hulmi stuffed the stat sheet as well as anyone, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal in 24 minutes.
 
Senior Anna Hall dished out six assists to move into second place in the UWF single-season list with 202 on the year.
 
Eckerd (22-10) shot just 32 percent overall for its fourth-lowest game all season. The Tritons made 8-of-32 from outside for 25 percent. The Argos lead the country in 3-point field goal defense, allowing opponents to convert just 24 percent.
 
UWF improved to 7-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 5-1 in regional first round contests. The Argos are making their sixth tourney appearance and fourth in the last six years.

UWF will face seventh-seeded Nova Southeastern (19-11) in Saturday's semifinal round at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The Sharks upended second-seeded Union, 71-66, in the second game at Florida Southern.
