PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Women's Tennis team swept the day against Northeastern State and Georgia College. The Argos have one more match this week to hopefully continue the newly formed winning streak.
UWF (4) v. NSU (1)
Doubles was taken over by the Argos with a quick win at the No. 3 spot with Valeria Mantilla and Jennifer Rink winning 6-2, followed by Berta Bonardi and Diana Vlad winning at the No. 1, 6-2, and clinching the doubles point.
In singles, the Argos only lost one singles match before winning overall. Vlad was the first to win, 6-3, 6-1, at the five spot followed by Rink at the three spot winning 6-0, 6-2.
Next to finish was Mantilla as she lost to Mayra Jovic in the two spot, 6-1, 6-2. The final win for the Argos came from Heather Mixon as she defeated Melissa Vera 6-1, 6-1. Bonardi's and Gabriela Araujo's matches were left unfinished.
UWF (4) v. GCSU (3)
After winning the morning, the Argos had a quick turn around to face Georgia College in an even battle of skill. The Argos fought hard and their perseverance and winning mindset pulled them through to get the win.
The Argos started the match trailing the RiverHawks 0-1 after losing doubles. Valeria Mantilla and Heather Mixon lost, 6-0 in the third spot, then Jennifer Rink and Diana Vlad defeated Emilia Richter and Kim Yatribi, 6-0 to keep the Argos alive. GCSU took the win in the one spot with Valeria Lopez and Emma Fleming defeating Gabriela Araujo and Isabella Calves, 6-1.
In singles, the Argos took a hard loss with No. 1 Berta Bonardi having to retire her match before it even begun due to injury giving the RiverHawks the lead 2-0. Rink and Vlad showed their strength and gave the team their first two wins making it a 2-2 match. Mixon was next to follow with a win at six over Jordan Bowie, 6-0, 6-1.
RiverHawk, Valeria Lopez defeated Valeria Mantilla 6-1, 6-2 making it a tied match 3-3 with only the fourth spot, Gabriela Araujo and Emma Fleming, left to finish. Both sets between the two finished 7-5 with Argonaut, Araujo, coming out on top each time. The Argos won 4-3 overall with a major team effort to pull out the win.
The Argos are now 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the GSC. Up next for the women is St. Mary's at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Saturday at 9:30 am CT.
