PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 10 UWF baseball lost a lead late but recovered to sweep the regular season series vs. Montevallo with a 6-5 win Wednesday. The Argos travel to Union this weekend.
"I was proud of the way the guys hung in there and came back there late," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "It was a good team win at home. We certainly needed it, and we showed the fight on this team."
Both teams used a platoon of relievers on the mound in a winding and wild game that ran close to three and a half hours.
Josh Pahlad started the game on the mound for the Argonauts and retired the first six he faced in the first and second before handing the ball to the relief corps of
Jared Hatch,
Hunter Lucas,
Jay Simpson,
Dylan Mills-Derouen and
Jared Middleton. Mills-Derouen (1-0) would pick up the win while
Jared Middleton earned his first save with three strikeouts in the ninth.
UWF (25-10, 15-3 GSC) benefited from 12 walks by a Montevallo pitching staff that featured nine different hurlers on the mound. Chandler Ingram (2-1) took the loss after failing to quell a three-run Argo rally in the bottom of the eighth.
The Argos loaded the bases in the first and second but scored just one run. A two-RBI single by
Isaac Phillips gave the team a 3-1 lead in the third. The Falcons scored the game's next four runs though, including three in the top of the eighth, to emerge with a 5-3 lead.
UWF rallied in the bottom of the penultimate frame to retake the lead.
Mike Farnell, who finished with two hits, two RBIs, two walks and a run scored, singled home
Matthew Estrada to trim the Falcon lead to 5-4. An RBI walk by
Mike Branche then evened the score at 5-5 before
Dylan Menhennett, who helped spark the rally by drawing a walk after entering the game off the bench, scored on a wild pitch to put the Argonauts ahead.
An error allowed the Falcons to board the tying run in the ninth before Middleton closed the game down. Each team finished with nine hits. The Falcons (15-19, 12-9 GSC) were led by Tyler Krabbe, who finished with two doubles and two runs scored.
UWF heads to Union (9-23, 3-15 GSC) this weekend. The schedule for the series has been reconfigured due to weather concerns. The three-game set will now begin Friday at 6:30 p.m. The series will conclude with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
