JACKSON, Tenn. – Starters
Tony Kucera and
Andrew Vaccacio combined for two complete games as No. 10 UWF baseball swept a doubleheader to win the three-game series at Union Saturday.
Kucera fired a four-hit, one-run, eight-strikeout gem in Game 1 to lead the Argos to a 9-1 victory. Vaccacio followed with a four-hit, seven-strikeout shutout performance in Game 2 to lead the squad to a 2-0 rubber match win.
"Proud of how the team responded today to come back and sweep the day to win the series," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Kucera and Vaccacio really picked up the team today and both threw great games."
Game 1: Argos 9, Bulldogs 1
Kucera turned in nine innings of masterful mound work in Game 1. The senior lefty improved to 7-0 by striking out eight and walking just two. Three of the four hits he surrendered were singles.
The Argo bats gave him plenty of support. UWF took a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back.
Adam Imwalle finished with three hits and two RBIs.
Matthew Estrada recorded a pair of hits and scored three runs.
Mike Branche posted a pair of hits, two RBIs and one run. He clubbed his second homer of the season in the eighth to run the score to 8-1.
The complete game was the second of the season for Kucera. It was his first in a nine-inning game in 2019 and the first he has thrown since recording a nine-inning complete game vs. West Georgia in last year's GSC Tournament.
Ryan Mets (2-3) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs. UWF outhit Union 10-4. The Bulldogs committed the only two errors of the game.
Game 2: Argos 2, Bulldogs 0
Vaccacio carded the second gem of the day for the Argo staff in Game 2. The senior lefty went the full seven frames, limiting Union to four hits while striking out seven and walking one. He stranded the bases loaded to end the game.
Vaccacio improved the 4-1 on the season by going seven innings for the third time. It was the sixth time in eight starts that he has surrendered one earned run or less this season.
The Argos scored the game's only two runs in the third on an RBI single by
Isaac Phillips and and a sacrifice fly by
Matt Sullivan. Branche and
Riley White scored the game's only runs.
Union starter Scott Shearer (1-4) suffered the loss despite allowing two runs (two earned) and five hits over seven frames. The Argos outhit the Bulldogs 5-4.
Trevor Payne finished with two hits. He has now reached in 32 straight games.
The Argos (27-11, 17-4 GSC) are now 17-4 vs. the Bulldogs (10-25, 4-17 GSC) since 2006. UWF will next meet Lee University (17-20, 8-10 GSC) in a three-game set beginning with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Jim Spooner Field Saturday, Apr. 13.
