The University of West Florida men's soccer team went on the road for the first time in 2019 and managed to keep its record unblemished as they defeated Rollins by a final of 1-0 at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.
A win for the Argonauts boosts their record to 3-0 on the young season with all three victories coming against Sunshine State Conference opponents while the loss for the Tars drops them to 0-1.
The Argos generally controlled play throughout as they out shot Rollins 11-7 with a six to two advantage in shots on goal as
Andrew Wentz,
Bernardo Torres,
Sean Hoffstatter and
Jerry Wiltshire paced the offense. Wentz and Torres each had one shot while Wiltshire and Hoffstatter had two apiece.
In the first half, each team was granted its fair share of opportunities but both defenses stood tall. The Argos backline of
Brandon Jose,
Jerry Wiltshire, and
Lucas Barankiewicz have been like a brick wall in front of
Jihad Gomes as they continued their early season success by posting a shutout. Overall, the University of West Florida defense only allowed two shots on goal and
Jihad Gomes had 3 saves on the afternoon.
After halftime, UWF continued to push ahead and was finally able to breakthrough the Rollins defense when a streaking Wentz went down the right sideline of the defense and was able to find Torres who beat the goalkeeper to give West Florida the lead in the 69th minute. It was Torres' first career goal for the squad after the Brazilian native transferred in over the off-season. Â
From there, the Argonauts played great defense to hold off a furious rally by the Tars to collect their third win of the season.
Next Up: UWF will return home to face the University of Mobile on Monday, September 16th. Kickoff between the Rams and Argonauts is set for 7:30pm.
