2019 Colorado Premier Challenge Info/Schedule
PENSACOLA, Fla. –  The Argos came out of the first day at the 2019 Colorado Premier Challenge with a 1-1 record and an overall record of 3-3. So far UWF has had six matches this season and four of those six have been against nationally ranked teams including the two today.Â
Against No. 10 Concordia: West Florida came out with arms on fire and a lively block. In the first set, UWF capitalized on going on several runs and dominating on defense. The Argos took set one 25-18 over the No. 10 Golden Bears. Set two was a different story.Â
The Argos came out just as they had finished, but errors got the best of them while Concordia's defense stepped up. Set two was a 25-14 decision with CSP coming out on top. In set three the two teams were in close competition with each other the whole time.Â
In the set there were several tie scores as the two teams battled it out keeping the other always at an arm's length. Ultimately, Concordia took the set and the match lead with a 25-20 win and the lead 2-1 in the match.Â
The final set was a race from behind for the Argos as Concordia stayed consistent with their attacks and UWF searched for a kill. The Argos fell 25-14 and the match ended 3-1 with the Golden Bears winning. Â
Against No. 11 Ferris: The Argos competed head-to-head with No. 11 Ferris in every point for the whole match. UWF dominated defensively allowing them to stay in the match. Overall the Argos out-blocked the Bulldogs 19-9. The point spread for the match was 81 points scored for the Argos and 80 points for FSU.
UWF won the second, fourth and fifth sets in decisions of 25-22, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19, 15-9 to lead to the Argo win.Â
Senior Jordyn Poppen led the match in kill with 18 followed by Phoebe Hozeska who had an outstanding match with 10 kills on 24 attempts hitting .333 with five block assists and a solo block. Also on her blocking game was JoDee Kovanda with seven block assists and two solo blocks and Veresia Yon who led the team in blocks with nine block assists and a solo block.
This was the Argos second time ever playing Ferris State and now their record is 1-1 making tonight's win the first time the Argos have won against the Bulldogs. Tonight's win is also Head Coach Melissa Wolter's first time ever to beat Ferris State in her coaching career.
