2019 Colorado Premier Challenge Info/Results
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Argos wrap up the 2019 Colorado Premier Challenge splitting matches both days. Today the Argos faced off against No. 20 Texas A&M-Commerce and No. 9 Tarleton State. The entire tournament, the Argos have only faced nationally ranked teams and in the season so far, six of the eight teams UWF has faced have been ranked.
Against No. 20 Texas A&M-Commerce: UWF had the early morning match against TAMUC where the Argos out-blocked the Lions, but fell in four in the end. The Argos stayed right with A&M for all of the sets and UWF dominated set two starting off with a 10-1 lead.
Big hitters for the Argos was Phoebe Hozeska leading with 10 kills and lead in blocks with six, followed by Jordyn Poppen with eight kills and three blocks.
On the defensive end Ashton Marshall led with 19 digs cleaning up the back row followed by Kierra Potts with 12 digs. Marissa Hackett also dominated at the net in blocks racking up four blocks and one of those being a solo block.
The Argos fell in four sets 25-19, 25-15, 25-21, 25-17 taking only the second set win.
Against No. 9 Tarleton: To wrap up the Argos time in Colorado, they came out with determination and such confidence that was evident to anyone who watched. West Florida came out and dominated 3-1 over the Texans. This was the first time these two teams have faced each other before and the Argos won in four 25-19, 25-21, 26-24, 25-15 only losing the third set in an intense battle for the win.
UWF out-blocked TSU 19-4 making this the Argos second match of the tournament with a total block count of 19. Hozeska lead the team in blocks with 11 followed by Veresia Yon with eight and Poppen with five. Yon also had an outstanding match hitting a .654 with 18 kills on 26 attacks with only a single error.
Yon also earned the GSC Freshman Player of the Week award for her play this weekend in Colorado.
Overall this weekend, UWF led the tournament in blocks with 10 solo blocks, 96 assisted blocks with a grand total of 58 blocks averaging 3.41 blocks per set. Veresia Yon tied with Izzy Gosar from Regis for the highest hitting percentage both hitting a .387. Yon had 37 kills on 75 attacks with only eight errors.
Yon and Hozeska also tied in first place for blocking each earning 23 blocks and averaging 1.64 blocks per set.
Up next for the Argos is another long distance trip to South Carolina where the Argos will play in the Pacer Invitational hosted by USC Aiken. UWF is set to face Francis Marion and USC Aiken on Friday, September 20th and on Saturday September 21 the Argos are going to play UNC Pembroke and Erskine.
