West Alabama Volleyball
PENSACOLA, Fla. –  This weekend, the West Florida volleyball team will host Mississippi College and West Alabama on Friday and Saturday. Friday at 6:00 pm the Argos will take on the Choctaws after they just had a big victory over West Alabama previously this week. On Saturday, UWF is set to face West Alabama at 1:00 pm which will be followed by a youth volleyball clinic that will be ran by the Argonaut team.
ABOUT UWF: Jordyn Poppen and Veresia Yon led the Argonauts with 22 and 19 kills respectively in the conference-opening win against UAH 3-2. Ashton Marshall totaled a team-best 24 digs. UWF tallied 13 blocks in the match, led by Phoebe Hozeska with seven total blocks.Â
Against Mississippi College, the Argos hold a 10-3 all-time lead over MC and have not lost to them since 2002. At home, UWF is 6-1 against MC. Both of these teams will come into this match 1-0 with the first GSC match in the books.
Against West Alabama, the Argos and the Tigers have a great history of competing against one another and the last time the two teams battled was in the GSC Championship match last year that went to five sets respectively with the Argos winning set five to win the Championship 15-13. The Argos all-time standings with the Tigers is 31-4 overall and 17-1 at home. The last time UWF lost to UWA was in 2009 in five sets at West Alabama in Livingston.
ABOUT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE: Mississippi College is coming off of a huge win this past Tuesday against West Alabama. For the first time since 2002, Mississippi College topped West Alabama in the Gulf South Conference opener on Tuesday evening in three sets. It marked the first time the Choctaws had swept its visitors from Livingston since 1994 - when the school was named Livingston University. They are now 4-8 on the season and 1-0 in the GSC.
Lexie Laurendine moved into seventh in career assists with her performances last weekend. The Clinton, Miss., native has registered 810 assists in her two-year career.Â
Julia Martin cracked the top 10 in career digs and service aces during the Mississippi College Tri-Match earlier this season. Martin sits ninth in career digs with 750 and 10th in service aces with 80. She ranks seventh in both categories.
Autumn Frost is chasing the career block assists and total blocks record. The Largo, Fla., native has tallied 118 block assists and 148 total blocks in her three seasons with the Navy and Gold. The mark places her eighth in program history in block assists and ninth in total blocks
ABOUT WEST ALABAMA: UWA is coming off of a loss to MC on Tuesday in three sets. The Tigers are 5-8 overall and 0-1 in conference, but will have to face Auburn Montgomery first on Friday before traveling to Pensacola to play the Argos.Â
On Tuesday for the Tigers, Taylor Donato led the team in kills as the GSC leader in the category posted 13 in the win and added nine digs.Jessica Akiona and Lindsey Heller both added six kills. Grace Harris passed 21 assists and added seven digs. The reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week Rebecca Johnson led with 22 digs with Akiona adding 18.
