2019 Springhill Suites Invitational Schedule
PENSACOLA, Fla. –  The Argos season is officially here as the Argos open up at home in the Springhill Suites Invitational against Western Washington, Wheeling University, Spring Hill College and Florida Tech.
UWF will face No. 3 Western Washington on Thursday, September 5, with first serve at 6 PM. Friday UWF is set to play Spring Hill at 11:30 am and later in the day they will face Florida Tech at 4:30 pm. Saturday the team will close out the tournament against No. 13 Wheeling at 3 pm.Â
ABOUT UWF: UWF returns eleven letter winners and three starters from a 2018 season that saw the Argonauts go 25-8 overall, 15-1 against Gulf South Conference teams and advance to the NCAA South Regional for the 13th consecutive year. Senior Jordyn Poppen returns after a strong 2018 campaign as Poppen put down 3.02 kills/set. Setter duo Senior Brogan Wallin and Sophomore Taylor Vaneekeren both wrapped up their 2018 seasons with over 600 assists and Wallin with 5.29 assists/set and Vaneekeren with 5.57 assists/set.
ABOUT WESTERN WASHINGTON: Coming off a 30-4 season and a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II Championships, the Vikings earned their highest preseason ranking in program history checking in at No. 3 in the AVCA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll. WWU was picked atop the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, gathering seven of the 11 first-place votes.
ABOUT WHEELING UNIVERSITY: Wheeling was ranked 13th nationally in the preseason AVCA coaches poll, having won the Atlantic Region Championship for the seventh time in the last eight years in 2018. The team welcomes back All-Americans Stephanie Sylvester and Cassie Meyer to this year's team.Â
ABOUT FLORIDA TECH: Florida Tech was recently picked to finish 11th in the Sunshine State Conference after going 9-22 in 2018. The Panthers' leading returning point-getter is Audrey Keenan, a junior outside hitter who averaged 1.51 kills per set last year. Kyra Atkinson ranked second on the team in digs last year, averaging 2.83 per set.Â
ABOUT SPRING HILL: Defending SIAC champions Spring Hill had five student-athletes selected to the preseason All-SIAC team. Middle hitter Kassandra Fairly was selected as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year along with teammate, Cassidi Sterrett, who was selected as Preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
