Men's Soccer Opens 2019 Season With Win Over Tampa

Hoffstatter's goal in 2OT in 108th minute seals the win

The UWF Men's Soccer team got off on the right foot in 2019 as they used a Sean Hoffstatter goal in the 108th minute in 2OT to escape past the University of Tampa by a final score of 2-1.

A deep and everlasting unit of Argonauts (1-0-0) provided the punch that the team needed on a humid, September night as substitutes Yuri Parisotto, Ryan Sandidge, Marko Tomic, Joshua Sauer, and Teavon Spencer each gave the team everything they had in 20+ minutes each off the bench.

The beginning of the game was kind of a feeling out process for both teams as each squad spent a lot of time in its own end trying to formulate a plan of attack.  In the 15th minute though, the home team capitalized on a penalty kick by redshirt junior Ed Chappe.  The 2018 All-GSC first teamer picked up right where he left off from last season as he hopes to have another fine season.

Following another period of back and forth play, Tampa finally broke through as forward Till Neumann was able to sneak a ball past goalkeeper Jihad Gomes to knot things all up at one apiece.

Gomes did have another solid game for the Argonauts as he was able to keep the Spartans at bay after that.  The two-time defending GSC defender of the week wasn't challenged much on the night as many shots were fired off target, but he stood tall when he needed too.

The rest of regulation was filled with back and forth play as the two evenly matched teams struggled to remain in control of possession which lead us into the overtime periods.

In the second overtime period, Coach Bill Elliott made a crucial substitution as redshirt senior forward Sean Hoffstatter re-entered for West Florida in the 100th minute.  It would prove crucial as Hoffstatter would use his golden right foot to rocket a ball past Tampa's all-time saves leader, Jake Richards, to make the home fans drive home happy.

This marked the fifth season in a row that UWF and Tampa have opened the season against each other with the Argonauts winning two, Tampa winning two and a draw.
