ABOUT UWF
* Winners of six of their last nine games, the UWF men's basketball team hits the road this week for a pair of games at Shorter and West Georgia. UWF is 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the Gulf South Conference, placing the team tied for sixth with Union (whom they hold the tiebreaker over).
* Sophomore Jon Brown continues to lead the UWF offense, ranking second in the GSC with 19.1 points per game. His team-high 6.8 rebounds are also 13th in the league.
* Freshman Daniel Sofield is second on the team in scoring with 9.0 ppg and is among the league leaders in 3-pointers made per game with 2.5 (7th). He has made multiple triples in eight of 15 games this season. He is the only Argo to have started all 15 games as well.
* Junior Tarik McKelphin has had back-to-back double figure games with 13 against Delta State and 22 against MC, to raise his season scoring average to 8.8 ppg. He is shooting 57 percent in his last three games and 74 percent (14-of-19) from inside the 3-point arc.
* Junior Lawrence Williams has seven games in double figures and is fourth with 8.3 ppg.
THE LAST TIME OUT
* UWF got a strong defensive effort in a 66-44 win over Mississippi College last Saturday at the UWF Field House. The Argos held the Choctaws to 30 percent shooting and outrebounded them 50-31.
* UWF shot 41 percent and produced consecutive 40-percent shooting games for the second time this season.
MAKING THE FREE ONES COUNT
* The Argonauts is sixth in the GSC, shooting 73 percent from the free throw line and have been very solid the past six games, making 72-of-94 for 77 percent.
* UWF has averaged 18 FT attempts per game this year (20 per game when you eliminate a pair of games with zero and four attempts), compared to 15 for the opponents.
BACK ON THE ROAD
* UWF is 1-4 on the road this season and has lost its last three after defeating Union 64-53 in late November.
SCOUTING SHORTER
* Shorter is 3-12 on the season and has lost its last six contests. The Hawks are 0-7 in the GSC.
* The Hawks average 76 points per game and allow a league-worst 86.2 ppg, along with a minus-9.4 scoring margin. The rank 12th in the GSC in field goal shooting at 41.1, just ahead of UWF's 39.7 pct.
* Ja'Cori Wilson leads a group of three players in double figures, averaging 16,1 ppg. Brian Polanco averages 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Jay Shropshire has made 40 3-pointers (5th in the GSC) and shoots 41 pct from outside on his way to 13.5 ppg.
UWF-SHORTER SERIES HISTORY
* UWF leads the series with Shorter 8-6 and has won the last six meetings. The Hawks had won the previous six after the Argos claimed the first two contests. The Argos are 4-3 at the Winthrop-King Centre and have won the last three, including last year's 92-64 decision.
SCOUTING WEST GEORGIA
* UWG is 4-10 overall and in ninth place in the GSC at 2-4 heading into Thursday's game against Valdosta State.
* West Georgia is one of the top rebounding teams in the legue, led by Kovi Tate. The Wolves average 38.9 boards per game with Tate pulling down 9.1 rebounds per contest, good for third in the league.
* Tate is also fourth in the GSC in scoring with 17.4 ppg, second with 57 pct. shooting and in the top 10 with 14 blocked shots in 14 games.
UWF-UWG SERIES HISTORY
* UWF and UWG are tied 14-14 over the last 14 years. The Wolves snapped a 5-game Argonaut win streak last year with an 87-79 win at the UWG Coliseum.
