MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Rachel McCree scored 19 points and UWF was opportunistic on the offensive glass for a 59-53 win over Auburn Montgomery at the AUM Gymnasium Thursday.
The win was the first true road win for UWF (6-15, 2-11 Gulf South), who outrebounded AUM 50-35, and used 19 offensive rebounds to score 15 second-chance points.
Danielle Norquest had 10 of her 17 rebounds on the offensive end.
McCree made four 3-pointers, including the essential game-winner from the right corner to put the Argos ahead 55-49 with 30 seconds left.
The Argonauts shot 34 percent and played physical in building a 28-25 lead at the half.
After falling behind 9-2, the Argos countered with a 9-0 run to take a 11-9 lead. The Warhawks ended the period with a 13-11 advantage.
UWF came out in the second and blitzed AUM to the tune of a 9-0 run to regain the lead, 20-13, with a
Danielle Norquest 3-pointer from the corner capping the scoring stretch.
The lead got to 10 points for the Argonauts on a McCree long ball from the top of the key with four minutes to play before half. The Warhawks battled back to within a point before
Charlotte Ellmore made two free throws in the final second to stake a 28-25 lead at the break. Ellmore finished the game with 17 points.
Victoria Morales hit a pair of 3-pointers to draw the Warhawks within one. UWF answered right back with baskets from
Ashaunti Brown and two from McCree, including another corner three – on the next three possessions to push the lead back to eight at 39-31.
UWF extended the lead to 50-43 after AUM cut it to 43-41 early in the fourth.
AUM (10-10, 3-9) got 20 points from Morales with four 3-pointers to lead all scorers. The Warhawks shot just 32 percent.
The Argos will remain on the road for a Saturday contest at West Alabama (9-9, 4-8) on Saturday evening. The game at Pruitt Hall in Livingston, Ala. will begin at 4 p.m.
