UWF Drops Heartbreaker On The Road To Montevallo, 59-57

UWF came back from an 18-point hole to lead late and have a chance to win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The UWF men's basketball team erased an 18-point deficit and had a chance to win the game in the final moments but Cameron Cox's 3-pointer was just short as the Argonauts lost at Montevallo, 59-57, at Trustmark Arena on Monday night.

UWF struggled to find its shots early in the opening half, missing it's first eight shots before falling behind 31-13 with 7:11 left in the first half. The Argonauts outscored the Falcons 17-8 to pull within 39-30 at the half. Daniel Sofield had eight points during the run, including two of his game-high three 3-pointers.

Jon Brown scored UWF's final 10 points over the game's last 5:29 to help the Argos tie the game and ultimately take a 56-54 lead with 2:15 to play. But UM made a three and got a second-chance layup to regain the lead, 59-56 with 1:06 on the clock.

Each team had a couple of empty possessions the rest of the game and following a made Brown free throw, UWF had the ball in front of its bench with 6.5 seconds left, leading to the final play as Cox was unable to find an open teammate and took a contested three from the top of the key with the ball caroming off the front of the rim and time expiring during the loose rebound.

UWF (5-8, 2-4 Gulf South) shot 37 percent in the game but 50 percent over the final 28 minutes. The Argonauts outrebounded the Falcons 35-30. Brown led the offense with 15 points, including 12 in the second half. Sofield had 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

UM (10-4, 6-0) remained perfect in GSC play after shooting 43 percent in the game. The Falcons made seven of their eight 3-pointers in the first half. Wade Lowman had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cedric Jackson had 10 points with three triples, including the one that put the Falcons ahead 57-56 in the final minutes.

UWF will return to the UWF Field House for two games this week. The stretch begins Thursday against Delta State (7-6, 3-2). The Argos and Statesmen will play at 7:30 p.m. with all fans encouraged to wear white for a White Out. The first 100 UWF students will receive a free t-shirt with a valid Nautilus Card.
