* UWF will open the 41st season of women's basketball Wednesday night against Shorter at the UWF Field House. The game will start at 6:30 and be carried by the UWF Sports Network, with distribution on GoArgos.com, Cox Sports Television and YurView Florida. The game is one of just 12 Division 2 women's games nationally - the men's game in Rome is one of just 11 on the men's national schedule.
UWF Hoops History 101
* The Argonauts are 579-508 all-time and 232-178 in GSC play … UWF has won three East Division and one overall regular-season titles, along with the 2013-14 GSC Tournament crown … The Argos have played in six NCAA Regional Tournaments – including four in the last seven years – and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017 with a school-record 28 victories … Prior to last year's 8-win campaign, UWF had averaged 21 wins in the previous six seasons.

* When the UWF basketball teams tipoff on Wednesday, it will be the first athletic competition for a UWF program since March 11, when the baseball team defeated Southern Indiana – a span of 273 days.
COVID-19 Protocols Put Small Crowd In UWF Field House
* In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, UWF will limit attendance for all December 2020 home men's and women's basketball games to immediate family members of UWF student-athletes and coaches. Visiting teams will be permitted a pre-approved guest pass list.
* Face coverings and at least six feet of social distancing will be required inside the arena by spectators and staff. Fans will not be allowed on the court at any time, including pre-and post-game.

* UWF leads the series 11-6 overall and 6-3 in Pensacola … UWF has won the last four over the Hawks at the UWF Field House … The teams split their series a year ago, with each holding serve at home.

Yelton Enters the Year with 197 Head Coaching Wins

Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her ninth season at UWF and has a 140-96 record at UWF … She is 197-180 in 13 seasons as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
GSC Split Into Divisions For First Time Since 2010-11
* With an abbreviated season due to the uncertainty of health and wellness brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic, the Gulf South Conference worked through a number of scheduling scenarios and ultimately settled on a 20-game slate using an East-West model … UWF is in the East with AUM, Lee, Montevallo, Shorter, Valdosta State and West Georgia … The Argos will face AUM and Montevallo four times, and the other four schools three times … The top four teams from each division will qualify for the GSC Championship.
GSC East Division Coaches Poll
* UWF was picked to finish sixth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Hawks were picked seventh … Defending champion Lee earned four of six first place votes and was picked first in the East, followed by Montevallo who received the other two first place votes. West Georgia, Valdosta State and Auburn Montgomery were ahead of the Argos, with Shorter picked seventh.
Norquest Named Preseason All-GSC

Danielle Norquest was named to the Preseason All-GSC East Division Team last week … The standout from Diamond, Ohio, is coming off a season in which she averaged 14.5 points and 12.9 rebounds per game … She is the third leading returning scorer in the GSC East Division … Last season she led the league and ranked sixth nationally with a school-record-tying 21 double-doubles … Norquest has 646 points and 524 rebounds in three seasons at UWF.

About the Hawks
* Jared Hughes is in his second season as the head coach at Shorter after going 1-25 in 2019-20 (1-19 in GSC play) … The Rome, Ga. native prepped at Pepperell HS before graduating from Georgia in 2003 … He was a prep coach and spent a season at Berry College in Rome before taking the job at Shorter.
*Â Jasmine Gaines returns for the Hawks after averaging 21.9 points and 6.7 rebounds a year ago. The senior also led the team with 75 assists and 70 steals in 2019-20. She had 23 points against UWF in Rome and 32 in Pensacola.
* The Hawks only have three returners from a year ago and added 10 newcomers, including eight freshmen.

Yelton Adds Three During Signing Period
* Head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton signed guards Jenna Gallimore and Kyra Stauble, along with forward Zoe Piller for next fall in the early part of the current signing period.
*Â Gallimore is a 5-foot-10 shooting guard from Brandenburg, Ky. She averaged 7.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 38 percent from the floor and 34 percent from outside during her junior season at Meade High School a year ago. Her 2.4 3-pointers made per game ranked her in the top 50 in the state of Kentucky in 2019-20. She is a 2-time all-district performer who has played on varsity since the eighth grade.
*Â Stauble is the reigning St. Johns County Player of the Year after leading St. Augustine High School to a county-best 19 wins in 2019-20. The 5-foot-8 point guard averaged 9.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 3.2 steals as she led the Yellow Jackets to the Class 5A District 4 title, the school's first in seven years. She also collected 11 double-doubles and had a season-high 21 points against First Coast HS before netting 14 against Pine Forest HS in the regional semifinals.
*Â Piller brings an inside presence to UWF as a 6-foot post player out of Nashville, Tenn. She eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau last season and currently has 1,056 points as a senior at Nolensville HS. The First Team All-Region and All-District honoree is already the school's career record holder in rebounds and blocked shots.
