Argonauts Big Third Inning Not Enough to Even Series at FSC

UWF and FSC close the three-game set Sunday at 1pm ET

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Argos scored five runs in the third inning to take the early lead, but were unable to hold off the Florida Southern Mocs at Historic Henley Field on Saturday afternoon. West Florida fell for the second time in the three-game set 6-5. The Mocs scored all six of their runs off of home runs in the game.

UWF got on the board first with a monster five run third inning. It all started with Sam Harris laying down a perfect bunt down the third base line for an infield hit. Then after a sacrifice bunt from Justin Dunnam, Miller Hancock singled, scoring Harris which gave the Argos the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning Adam Imwalle doubled down the left field line putting UWF up 2-0. Freshman Raynel Ortiz followed with an RBI bloop single to left field increasing the lead to 3-0. West Florida added two more runs in the inning after Bryant Harris Jr. also doubled down the left field line scoring two, making the score 5-0 at the end of the top of the third.

Florida Southern answered right back in the bottom of the third with a two-out three-run homer to left field, making the score 5-3 at the end of three. The Mocs tacked on solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings, both coming again with two outs to tie the game at five a piece. Both teams remained tied at five until the bottom of the 10th inning, when FSC hit a walk-off homer to make the final score 6-5 in favor of the Mocs.

Senior Daniel Floyd started for West Florida and went 5.0 innings allowing four earned runs on 97 total pitches. He gave up two home runs, including a three-run homer in the third inning with two outs. Floyd finished the night with nine strikeouts and three walks. He received a no decision, as the Argos were winning 5-4 when he came out of the ballgame. Alex Knight suffered the loss as he was the one that gave up the walk-off homer in the 10th inning.

"It was a disappointing loss today with the walk-off homer at the end. Home runs were the straw that broke our back today. They finished with four of them in the game," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "We also left 13 runners on base and outhit them 13-9. We had opportunities in the late innings to take the lead and just couldn't get the job done unfortunately."

UWF and FSC will wrap up their season opening series on Sunday at Historic Henley Field. The senior transfer from Florida Atlantic, Eric Keating (0-0), is expected to make his first start for West Florida. Chase Pilato (0-0) will make his first start of the season for Florida Southern. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1:00 pm ET.

"Now we have to come back out here tomorrow and try to save the series by getting a W, which is very important to avoid being swept. I think the team is going to come out fighting, so we'll see what happens tomorrow" Jeffcoat said about tomorrow's matchup against the Mocs.
