HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- For the seventh ranked UWF women's tennis team, three was definitely a charm as they finished their three match road trip in Alabama with a resounding 7-0 victory over Alabama Huntsville on Sunday afternoon.
The Argonauts (4-1, 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference) previously defeated West Alabama and Montevallo this weekend before besting UAH (0-2, 0-1 in the GSC).
Even though UWF won with relative ease over the weekend as the girls won each match 7-0, Argonaut head coach
Derrick Racine said it was not an easy task.
"On paper it looks like the girls had an easier time but there were really a lot of good teams on the women's side and all the matches were very close and our girls had to dig and scrape them out", Racine noted. Â
Sunday, West Florida was able to start fast, winning two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead with the always reliable duo of
Karolina Silwanowicz and
Gabriela Araujo as well as
Lais Bicca and
Irene Recuenco earning points for the Argonauts.
Recuenco, Araujo and Silwanowicz were then able to dispatch their singles opponents in straight sets while
Berta Bonardi,
Samantha Echevarria and junior
Lucie Lesecq all won in three sets.
Overall, Racine was happy about the direction the girls were heading in after the weekend. "I'm really happy with the way the teams are performing, said the UWF Head Coach. We're putting in a lot of hard work and getting better each match which is really all we can ask for. It's a tough February with most of our matches on the road but this will only make us more resilent and better prepared as we get into the heart of the season."
UWF will get a few days off before returning to action on Sunday, February 23rd for their first home match against Lee at 9 am.
