OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- Despite taking a 1-0 advantage after winning the first two doubles matches of the night, the third ranked UWF men's tennis team ultimately fell to top-ranked Barry by a final of 4-2 inside the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Saturday night.
The loss drops the Argos to 7-2 on the season and puts them in the third place game of the tournament while the Buccaneers move to 4-0 and will meet Columbus State in tomorrow afternoon's ITA Team Indoor Final.
The Argonauts got off to a blazing start as the Swedish pairing of
Serdar Bojadjiev and
Adam Svensson plus
Juan Motta and
Salvador Bandeira were able to capture their respective matches by finals of 6-4 each.
UWF was unable to sustain the momentum as the powerful Buccaneers, led by three players ranked inside the top 42 of the ITA men's singles rankings including top ranked player Alejandro Gallego, won the first three matches during the single period.
Bojadjiev earned a point back for the Argos as he defeated Carlos Gomez by a score of 7-6, 6-1 which gave the Argos a chance to rebound.
Senior
Juan Cabrera put up a terrific effort of his own as he went to three sets with his opponent but ultimately he ended up falling 6-4, 4-6, 2-6. Svensson played in the #6 spot for West Florida but due to the matched already being clinched by Barry, his match went unfinished.
The Argonauts will close out their time tomorrow at the ITA Indoor Team Champions with a third-place match against ninth-ranked Hawaii Pacific. The match between the Sharks and Argos will begin at 5:30pm inside the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
