Men's Tennis Drops Final Match of Tourney to Hawaii Pacific

Argos will host #5 Saint Leo on Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- Despite battling back from a 3-1 deficit and nearly completing a comeback, the third ranked UWF men's tennis team fell in its final match of the Inaugural ITA Team Indoor Championship, 4-3 to Hawaii Pacific on Sunday night at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

West Florida drops to 7-3 on the season while the Sharks move to 7-4.  Earlier in the day, Columbus State defeated Barry by a final of 4-0 to capture the championship.

"We are a little disappointed that we lost two very close matches the last two days and we weren't able to captialize on some of our opportunities", UWF Head Coach Derrick Racine said.  The teams that we played are some of the best in the nation so you have to work for every point and no point comes easy."

After a tough start where the Argonauts dropped the first two matches of doubles to fall a point behind, UWF came roaring back in singles action.

Serdar Bojadjiev, a senior from Sweden and ranked 11th in the nation, led the charge for the blue and white by winning his third match of the weekend.  Bojadjiev took down Marcel Hornung of HPU by a final of 6-1, 7-5.  The Swedish native also defeated Joseph Canyadell, the 46th ranked player in the country from Wingate, earlier in the weekend.

Following Bojadjiev, fellow Argos, Salvador Bandeira and Pedro Cordeiro took down their respective opponents by finals of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4, 3-6 and 7-5.  Bandeira continued his hot streak on the weekend as he was part of two other doubles' wins with Juan Motta as they defeated pairings from both Barry University and Wingate.

The match between the Argos and Sharks came down to the last match of the night as Senior Juan Cabrera battled hard but ultimately fell to Matej Panik 6-1, 6-7, 4-6 to end the tournament.

Although the team ended the trip on a down note, Racine stayed positive.  "It's still early in the season and these will be good learning opportunities for us.  I feel the guys are all playing really well.  Right now, our main focus is trying to get a little bit better each and every day.  We have a couple big weeks ahead of us with a spring break trip in San Antonio, and then we come back home for a couple of quality matches", Racine continued.  "We have been playing on the road for much of the start of the season and we are really looking forward to getting back on our home turf on the courts that we are used to playing on every day."

West Florida will get a chance to rest and recover before returning to their aforementioned home at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on March 7th and 8th when they face Saint Leo and the University of Texas at Tyler.  Those matches will begin at 10am and 2pm on the campus of the University of West Florida.
