Lucas’ Strong Start Spoiled by Rollins, Forcing Rubber Match on Sunday

The Rubber Match will be at 1pm on Sunday

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida finished on the wrong side of the pitching duel today in game two of the series to Rollins, losing 2-0 at Jim Spooner Field on Saturday afternoon. Hunter Lucas had a strong performance in his first start of the year pitching seven innings allowing two earned runs, five hits and issued one walk.

The Argonauts were held scoreless for the second time this season. In the second inning, the Tars scored off a solo homer from Jake Rolly giving Rollins the 1-0 lead. They extended their lead in the fifth when Devon Ortiz bunted for a single, scoring from third to increase Rollins' score to 2-0.

"It was a well-pitched ball game today. Lucas gave us a great seven innings, scattered two runs. We had some opportunities in the game, but were unable to put much pressure on them since we only had a few guys get in scoring position. We've got to be more disciplined at the plate going forward," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat.

UWF and Rollins will wrap up their series on Sunday at Jim Spooner Field. Senior, Daniel Floyd (0-0), will get the start for the Argos in the rubber match. He pitched five innings allowing four earned runs and six hits in his first start of the season last week at Florida Southern. Carson Hauben (0-0) will make his second start of the season for Rollins. He went five shutout innings with three strikeouts and only let up 3 hits. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1:00 pm.

"Tomorrow is going to be a big day for us, it's a rubber match game with the series on the line. We need to come out with the same type of energy and persistence tomorrow," Jeffcoat said.
