PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Rachel McCree scored a career-high 29 points to lead UWF past Shorter, 76-71, in the annual Play 4 Kay cancer awareness game at the UWF Field House Saturday.
McCree started hot with 18 points in the first half on 7-of-10 shooting. She finished the day 10-of-26 with four 3-pointers.
Faithe Franklin had 17 points and 13 rebounds, while
Danielle Norquest matched her with a double-double of 17 and a career-high 20 boards.
UWF (7-17, 3-13 Gulf South) scored a season-high points and grabbed a season-best 27 offensive rebounds, which led to 28 second-chance points. The Argos shot 42 percent in the first half and 35 percent overall.
The Argonauts got out to a 6-0 lead and really never let up. The Hawks closed within a point three times over the course of the first half, including with 3:39 to play before UWF closed the frame on a 7-3 run for a 37-32 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Shorter rattled off a 7-0 run over a 3-minute stretch that trimmed the UWF lead to 67-64 with 2:40 left. But the Argos got a pair of 3-point possessions with a single free throw before an offensive rebound led to a layup. The second one came from Norquest who's putback gave the Argos a 73-66 lead with 19 tics remaining.
Shorter (1-19, 1-15) shot 43 percent and committed 13 turnovers. Jasmine Gaines scored a game-high 32 points.
UWF will hit the road next week to face Delta State (16-6, 9-6) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night in Cleveland, Miss.
