PENSACOLA, Fla.- On a day where the UWF men's tennis team needed to dig deep, they found that extra gear to defeat Saint Leo by a score of 4-3 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The win moves the third-ranked Argos to 8-3 on the season while fifth-ranked Saint Leo falls to 5-4.
The Argonaut men started off strong, winning the first two doubles pairings to take a 1-0 advantage as
Nicolas Lecoutre and
Gabriel Nery along with
Juan Motta and
Salvador Bandeira were victorious 6-4 and 6-2. Senior
Serdar Bojadjiev and Freshman
Adam Svensson were leading their match 5-4 before the match went unfinished as UWF had already clinched the point.
The singles matches were a bit dicier as Saint Leo took two out of the first three matches with only Argo senior
Juan Cabrera capturing his match-up, 7-5, 6-3 in the #6 spot.
Bandeira recovered for the Argonauts as he defeated top 50 ranked player, Ghali Mensour, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 to put West Florida up 3-2 at that point. Lecoutre suffered a tough fate in his match to ultimately fall in three sets, leaving Bojadjiev to win the dual for the Argos.
After dropping the first set 6-7, the Swedish native roared back with consecutive 6-2, 6-2 set victories to clinch the dual for the blue and white.
The guys will look to sweep the weekend as they host the University of Texas at Tyler tomorrow, March 8th. The match will begin at 2pm from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
