UWF Completes Midweek Sweep Over Southern Indiana

Argos improve to 14-8

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team capped off a midweek sweep over Southern Indiana on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-3 win at Jim Spooner Field. The win put UWF at 14-8 on the year, leading into a weekend Gulf South Conference series at Lee.

"We came out again and swung the bats well in the first inning and got ahead," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "Anytime you can finish up a strong homestand, that's important for us. Now we have to go test ourselves at Lee this weekend."

West Florida struck early, with three runs in the first. The first came when left fielder Dylan Menhennett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Matthew Estrada. Adam Imwalle followed with a grounder up the middle, and Miller Hancock put a two-out single through the right side of the infield to stretch the Argonaut lead to 3-0.

Hancock was at it again in the third inning, with another two-out single that scored Menhennett and put UWF ahead 4-0.

Southern Indiana put three runs on the board in the fourth and fifth innings to cut into UWF's lead, but the Argonauts scored three of their own in the bottom of the fifth. The first came on a solo shot from Imwalle – his first home run of the year – and next two came off the bat of a Sam Clement single to left field that brought in Hancock and Bryant Harris.

West Florida scored its final two runs with a Menhennett double to center field, bringing in Brooks Mitchell and Dawson Redd.

Freshman Sean Means got the start for the Argonauts, going 4.1 innings and allowing three unearned runs. Jared Hatch got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year, with 2.2 innings of hitless relief, before Chase Evans and Josh Pahlad each threw an inning apiece.

"I thought Sean Means had a nice start for us," Jeffcoat said. "We had some nice days out there. Sam Clement caught the last two days and had two RBIs, Miller Hancock continues to drive in runs when we need him, Imwalle had the home run, and Menhennett had three RBIs. We're getting production up and down the lineup when we need it.

"I'm proud of the players, the way they brought it, and had the purpose in wanting to win some ballgames. We put ourselves in good position, and if we can keep this momentum going, we'll be in good shape."

West Florida will start a weekend series at Lee on Friday, March 13, with a single game at 4 pm ET. The series wraps at 1 pm ET on Saturday with a doubleheader.
