PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida defeated West Georgia in an offensive shootout by a final score of 14-9 on Sunday to win the weekend series against the Wolves. UWF's record now stands at 12-8 overall and 9-3 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Argos hand #17 ranked West Georgia their first three-game series loss of the season.
Eric Keating started the game for the Argos and pitched 3 innings giving up six earned runs while striking out two. UWF's offense accumulated 13 hits and had 10 runners left on base to end the day.
The Argonaut offense started the game strong scoring eight runs in the first frame to jump out to an 8-0 early lead. Raynel Ortiz, Bryant Harris Jr. and Miller Hancock all singled in some Argonaut runs in the inning with the only extra base hit coming off the bat of Cullan O'Shea, when he doubled to left center for an RBI. West Georgia committed four defensive errors in the frame to help prolong the inning for UWF.
West Georgia responded with a run in the top of the third off an infield hit from Dan Oberst that scored the Wolves' first run of the game.
UWF had the bases-loaded in the third inning and plated two runs off a fielder's choice and a one-out single to left field by O'Shea making the score 10-1.
The Wolves cut into the Argos lead in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits against Keating.
Josh Pahlad came in relief for Keating in the fourth inning and went three innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits. Pahlad got the win in the game, picking up his first win of the season to improve to 1-0 in 2020.
The Argos answered right back in the bottom half of the fourth with two runs of their own, as they capitalized on two more UWG errors. West Georgia finished the game with seven total errors defensively.
Dylan Menhennett led off the fifth inning with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from True Fontenot to make the score 13-6.
West Georgia would add two runs in the sixth off Pahlad in his last inning of work. Pahlad allowed two doubles and a single in the inning.
Both teams went on to add one run each to make the final score 14-9 in favor of the Argos.
UWF will be back at home on Tuesday, as they will begin a two-game series against Southern Indiana at Jim Spooner Field with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm.
