TDIAH - FB at Ave Maria

This Day In Argo History: 2016 - Inaugural Football Game

The Argos crushed Ave Maria 45-0

Phenomenal. Beautiful. Wonderful. Destiny.

Those words were all referenced multiple times by coaches, student-athletes and some high-ranking administrators four years ago following UWF's first-ever football game. That 45-0 win at Ave Maria in the sunshine... and then the rain from the system of Hurricane Hermine, set the tone for the season and has proven a program characteristic of not backing down and playing hard for 60 minutes.

The first half saw play go back-and-forth with the teams combining for eight punts and a fumble. But the Argonauts struck first with a rushing touchdown from Tim Bellinger and a Kaleb Nobles passing TD to Caleb Robinson.

Just after the teams went to the locker rooms, the sky turned gray and the rain began to fall. Flashes of lightning followed and forced the facility to be cleared. The delay lasted 2 and a half hours. When the game was restarted the grass field was soaked and the Ave Maria sideline was covered in standing water.

None of that bothered the Argos as they came out and scored on five of their first seven possessions of the second half. UWF put up 31 second-half points, outgaining AMU 500-105 in a joyful, convincing victory that couldn't have been dreamed much better. Nobles threw for 229 yards on 20-of-28 passing with two touchdowns. Bellinger recorded the first 100-yard rushing game in history with 101 and two scores.

The defense held the Gyrenes to just two rushing yards, thanks to seven sacks and 14 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. 28 different players had at least one tackle, led by Andre Duncombe's seven.

Some of the 'Firsts' that day included:
Game captains: Anas Hasic, Antoine Griffin, Reggie Barnes and John Williamson
Play: Ave Maria false start
Tackle: Andre Duncombe and Ronald Bell
Sack: Andre Duncombe and John Williamson
Offensive Play: Kaleb Nobles pass attempt to Rodney Coates
Rushing Touchdown: Tim Bellinger 2-yard rush in the 2nd quarter
Passing TD: Kaleb Nobles to Caleb Robinson from the 15 yard line late in the 2nd quarter.

Everything went just like you hoped it would for the first game in program history. A week later, the team won it's first home game in front of a standing-room only crowd at Blue Wahoos Stadium. But the first win came on the road. Seems kind of fitting considering the program has made a name for itself in the postseason with the road warrior, Trap mentality that has resulted in a 21-9 all-time road record.

Happy Anniversary Argo Nation!
