Confident Argo Squad Travels to Shorter For Weekend Pair

The Argos have won two of their last three contests

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Fresh off a home win over No. 18 Lee, UWF will travel to Rome, Ga. for a pair of games this weekend against Shorter at Winthrop-King Centre. Friday's game will start at 6 p.m. Eastern Time and Saturday's is slated for a 2 p.m. ET tipoff.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF improved to 3-4 on the season with a home split against No. 18 Lee last weekend. The Lady Flames won the Friday game 65-54 before the Argos claimed a 71-61 victory on Saturday.
* Senior F Danielle Norquest leads the team with 13.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. She is also shooting 46 percent from the floor and 46 percent from outside, making 12-of-26 3-pointers.
* Junior G Charlotte Ellmore is second on the squad with 11.0 ppg and leads UWF with 13 3-pointers. She has made at least two triples in five games and at least one in all seven contests.
* UWF is averaging 64.7 ppg as a team on 35 pct. shooting. They are allowing 72 ppg on 46 pct. shooting.
 
NORQUEST NAMED GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AFTER WHITE HOT PLAY AGAINST LEE
* Senior F Danielle Norquest was named the GSC East Division Player of the Week on Tuesday following a pair of strong performances against No. 18 Lee last weekend.
* The senior from Diamond, Ohio averaged 19 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5 steals per game while shooting 59 percent from the floor, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range. She posted back-to-back double-doubles, including tying her career high with 27 points in Saturday's 71-61 upset win over the Lady Flames. She was especially dominant in the fourth quarter, collecting 12 points and three rebounds, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line down the stretch. She had a career-high five steals in each game as well.
 * Norquest leads the team with 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Her strong play last week saw her rise in the GSC East Division statistical categories, climbing to fourth in scoring and maintaining her lead on the glass.
 
UWF TIES MODERN SCHOOL 3-POINT RECORD
* After three games this season, UWF had made just 18 3-pointers for 6.0 made per game. The squad has found its stroke in the last four contests, connecting on 38 for 9.5 per game, bringing its season average to 8.0 per game, ranking fourth in the GSC overall and second in the East Division behind Lee's 8.8.
* Last week against No. 18 Lee, UWF made 22 triples in the two contests, marking the most in consecutive games since at least the 1993-94 season.
* The 12 makes in the 71-62 win were the most since making 12-of-27 against Concordia-Selma on Feb. 23, 2010.

* Historically, UWF has been a dominant rebounding team at both ends of the floor and 2020-21 appears to be no different. UWF leads the GSC at 42.9 rpg and is third in rebound defense, allowing just 34.4 rpg.

* The Argonauts are 581-511 all-time and 234-181 in GSC play … UWF has won three East Division and one overall regular-season titles, along with the 2013-14 GSC Tournament crown … The Argos have played in six NCAA Regional Tournaments – including four in the last seven years – and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017 with a school-record 28 victories … Prior to last year's 8-win campaign, UWF had averaged 21 wins in the previous six seasons.
 
SCOUTING SHORTER
* Shorter is 1-9 on the season and has lost eight-consecutive games. The Lady Hawks are averaging 58.8 ppg and shooting 32 pct. overall and 26 pct. from outside.
* Jasmine Gaines leads the team with 13 ppg but has only played in the five most recent contests. She averaged 21.9 points and 6.7 rebounds a year ago. She had 23 points against UWF in Rome and 32 in Pensacola a year ago.
* Julia Peroni has started all 10 games and posted 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
* Jared Hughes is in his second season as the head coach at Shorter after going 1-25 in 2019-20 (1-19 in GSC play) … The Rome, Ga. native prepped at Pepperell HS before graduating from Georgia in 2003 … He was a prep coach and spent a season at Berry College in Rome before taking the job at Shorter.
 
UWF-SHORTER SERIES HISTORY
* UWF leads the series 12-6 overall and 6-3 in both Pensacola and Rome … The teams split their series a year ago, with each holding serve at home.
* UWF claimed a 94-67 win in the season-opener for both teams back on Dec. 9. Gabby Brown scored 16 points in her UWF debut to lead four Argos in double figures. UWF shot 48 pct. and made nine 3-pointers. The Argos outrebounded the Hawks 57-30, which aided in 32 second-chance points off 23 offensive rebounds.
* Fanny Hulmi and Charlotte Ellmore had 13 points apiece, while Danielle Norquest came off the bench to finish with 10 points, seven boards and four assists. Ellmore handed out a game-high seven assists as UWF assisted on 24 of its 34 made baskets.
* In two games against Shorter last year, Danielle Norquest averaged 18 points and 18 rebounds with two double-doubles against the Hawks ... Charlotte Ellmore had 19 points in the game at Shorter to match Norquest for game-high scoring, while Rachel McCree had 13 points on the road and erupted for a career-high 29 points and eight rebounds in the 76-71 home win on Feb. 8.

* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her ninth season at UWF and has a 143-98 record at UWF … She is 200-182 in her 14th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* As a head coach, she has 12 wins apiece versus Shorter and West Alabama, and 11 against both Delta State and Valdosta State

GSC SPLIT INTO DIVISIONS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2010-11
* With an abbreviated season due to the uncertainty of health and wellness brought on by the Corona virus pandemic, the Gulf South Conference worked through a number of scheduling scenarios and ultimately settled on a 20-game slate using an East-West model … UWF is in the East with AUM, Lee, Montevallo, Shorter, Valdosta State and West Georgia … The Argos will face AUM and Montevallo four times, and the other four schools three times … The top four teams from each division will qualify for the GSC Championship.
 
UWF PICKED 6TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish sixth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Falcons were picked second … Defending champion Lee earned four of six first place votes and was picked first in the East, followed by UM who received the other two first place votes. West Georgia, Valdosta State and Auburn Montgomery were ahead of the Argos, with Shorter picked seventh.
 
NORQUEST NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* Senior F Danielle Norquest was named to the Preseason All-GSC East Division Team last week … The standout from Diamond, Ohio, is coming off a season in which she averaged 14.5 points and 12.9 rebounds per game … She is the third leading returning scorer in the GSC East Division … Last season she led the league and ranked sixth nationally with a school-record-tying 21 double-doubles … Norquest enters the Lee game with 656 points and 532 rebounds in three-plus seasons at UWF.
 
WHAT'S BACK FOR THE ARGOS
