ROME, Ga. – The UWF women's basketball team had a solid shooting performance but was unable to hold off a late Shorter run, falling to the Lady Hawks, 73-70, at the Winthrop-King Centre on Saturday.
UWF (4-5, 4-5 Gulf South) had it's two-game win streak snapped, despite shooting 41 percent and making seven 3-point field goals. The Argonauts also dominated the glass with a 41-22 rebounding margin.
Fanny Hulmi tied her career high with 20 points on a season-best three outside jumpers. Senior
Gabby Brown registered her first double-double of the year with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Peyton Lewis came off the bench to establish a new season-high for the second-consecutive game, finishing with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She had 15 on Friday against the Lady Hawks.
The game started evenly, with four lead changes in the first six minutes. The Lady Hawks then closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run for a 22-13 lead. UWF battled back in the second period, using a 10-2 run near the end of the segment to close within 39-38 at the half. The Argos found their shooting touch from outside, making 3-of-4 after opening the game just 1-of-10.
After a Shorter layup to start the third quarter, UWF went on a 14-0 run to grab a 52-41 lead with 4:40 to play in the period. The Argo lead was eight points to open the fourth before the Lady Hawks made a pair of 3-pointers and then got three free throws to regain the lead 57-56.
UWF answered back with a Brown layup and a triple from
Fanny Hulmi to go up 61-57 with 6:00 left. The Argos held the lead until the final 1:38. Shorter took a 68-67 edge on a Christian Bolden layup before Hulmi tied it with a free throw. Chatham Brown got a layup to fall with 40 seconds left and put Shorter up by two. Following a Lady Hawk free throw to go up three, Lewis made a running jumper to trim the margin back to one with 15 tics remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Hulmi stole the inbounds pass and went the length of the court before missing her layup that would have give UWF the lead. Instead, Shorter got the rebound and was fouled where Brown made two free throws to provide the final margin. UWF advanced the ball after the timeout but Lewis' three from the top of the key was off the mark.
Bolden led all scorers with 24 points after she made 5-of-9 from outside for Shorter (2-10, 2-10). Brown and Jasmine Gaines were also in double figures for the Lady Hawks.
UWF will return to play next week as it opens a 3-game homestand on Tuesday against league leading No. 7 Valdosta State (12-1, 12-1). Tip-off at the UWF Field House is at 6:30 p.m. Central Time.
